Welcome to the September Cirrostratus Group Newsletter

This fall the FCC is supposed to issue new rules on net neutrality. History can often provide perspective on current events and I was intrigued by a recent article in Smithsonian Magazine on this topic. "It was the use of public policy to create economics that favored the big players" referring to the FCC regulation of radio waves in the 20s. Sound familiar?

Sometimes in the desire to develop SaaS application functionality it is easy to forget about some of the more mundane aspects of the application such as performance and capacity management. Gartner has highlighted the risks of ignoring these areas and has provided some suggested solutions which I've included below.

Net Neutrality

The October issue of Smithsonian magazine has an interesting article about the early days of controlling radio waves for commercial purposes and the parallels with the battle on net neutrality. One of my conclusions from the article is that if history is the guide, the new rules will in fact favor large businesses which is the direction this is currently heading.
Performance and Capacity Management
Are you worried about your application outgrowing it's capacity? Gartner is predicting a shortage of performance and capacity management professionals by 2016. More importantly they have some recommendations of how to avoid some of the requirement for these skills which in general will make for better running applications. Some excellent suggestions here.
