The Alcohol and Other Drugs Program

Alcohol and drug use by adolescents affects American families from all walks of life. As a community we must make sure that every teen struggling with drug use has the tools to move in a different direction. At Fremont Youth and Family Services we work to equip youth with these tools. Our Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) early intervention program assists teens who have been impacted by drug use, providing them and their families with the information and guidance they require.
If an adolescent gets in to trouble with the law due to drugs they may enter an already overburdened criminal justice system. During the period of 2005-2006 California counties on average paid $65,000 per offender in juvenile detention. AOD programs work with those that have become involved with drugs to decrease the chances of them developing lifelong addictions and to keep them out of the criminal justice pipeline
Youth and Family Service's AOD Program helps adolescents attain knowledge on how drug use affects their bodies, families, relationships, and futures. With the guidance of a professional counselor lasting changes can be made in the way an adolescent approaches drugs or alcohol in the future.

FINANCIAL Security:
Save My Money! Workshop
On December 5, 2013, the SparkPoint Fremont FRC introduced a new resource to assist individuals in being money-smart. The Save My Money! Workshop uses an innovative financial education curriculum to raise awareness about predatory financial products and accessible low cost alternatives. The workshop is taught by two FRC volunteer financial coaches, Neha Jain and Mari Manglicmot. Both have an interest in working to keep residents safe from the negative impact of financial predators such as payday lending, check cashing, credit cards, and others.
More workshops are planned for this Spring. We hope to host the workshop at the new Union City Kid's Zone SparkPoint Center, and at low-income housing complexes in Hayward and Newark.
The Save My Money! Workshop was created in partnership with Alameda County Community Asset Network (ACCAN), and is adapted from the Savvy Consumer Toolkit curriculum developed by ACCAN.
For more information or to enroll in an upcoming workshop, please call SparkPoint Financial Services at 574-2020.

Seniors:
Take Charge of your Driving Safety!
Driving safety is critical for everyone on the road but becomes even more important to pay attention to as we age. As we get older, our bodies go through different changes and these changes in our vision, physical and/or cognitive abilities can affect our capacity to operate an automobile safely.
The Transportation Resource Specialists with the Tri-City Mobility Management Program can help older adults:
- Learn to maintain their driving skills as they age;
- Know when and how to change driving behaviors to stay safe;
- Understand what's involved with license renewal and DMV re-examinations;
- Obtain information about alternative transportation resources; and,
- Prepare a back-up plan for when someone is no longer able to drive.
Older adults often avoid conversations about driving safety because it may bring up fears of losing their independence, becoming a burden to others, and becoming disconnected from friends and family. Being proactive in assessing and maintaining one's driving safety and becoming knowledgeable about community resources is an easy step seniors can take. It also prepares seniors for that moment when changes in their health may leave them temporarily or permanently unable to drive.
For more information, contact Shawn Fong, Transportation Resource Specialist, at (510) 574-2033 or sfong@fremont.gov.
The Tri-City Mobility Management Program is funded by the Alameda County Transportation Commission through Measure B sales tax dollars. For more information on Measure B, visit: www.alamedactc.org

City of Fremont Police Department Programs
The Fremont Police Department utilizes Nixle as its primary communication tool to keep Fremont residents and business owners informed about public safety information. The Department began using Nixle in 2010 and has since gained more than 8,000 followers. As a Nixle user, you can elect to receive messages by text or email. The Department frequently sends out police blotter items, information about department events, road closures and general public advisories. The Nixle system is free and it only takes a few minutes to sign up once you go to www.nixle.com or via the Fremont Police Department's website at www.fremontpolice.org. Once signed up, you can select the type of information that you would like to receive. The most common setting is "Alert, Advisory and Community," however some people prefer to only receive the alerts and advisory messages. If you aren't interested in setting up an account, you also have the option to just receive "alert and advisory" messages by texting a Fremont zip code to 888-777. We hope that you will follow us soon!

You Are Not Alone Program (Y.A.N.A.)

In the City of Fremont we want our elderly and disabled citizens to know that they are never alone. The Y.A.N.A. program, or "You Are Not Alone," is a free telephone reassurance program for Fremont residents, and is one of the many valuable public services provided by volunteer members of the City of Fremont Police Department. While enrollees in the program are generally able to take care of their own day-to-day needs, they also recognize that a medical crisis in or about the home could render them helpless and worsen if their distress goes unnoticed.
Police volunteers make regular daily phone calls to enrollees, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. If an enrollee does not answer the phone after several attempts, a series of steps follow to ensure their safety and well-being, including a possible home visit by the volunteer.
There is no cost for enrollment in the Y.A.N.A. Program. Complete the Y.A.N.A. Interest Form and return it to the Fremont Police Department at the address provided on the form, by faxing the form to (510) 790-6741 or by calling (510) 790-6691. All information provided in the application process is kept confidential.

Senior Center Renovations!
The Fremont Senior Center is going through some exciting renovations. There will be a new women's bathroom built in the courtyard between the dining room and "A" wing. In addition, the bathrooms located near the lobby will have expanded larger stalls that will make it easier for wheelchair and scooter access. The Senior Center will also be obtaining a generator which will help operate when there are electrical interruptions, and provide hot meals for emergency workers during a disaster. These projects are expected to commence in early Summer.

Aging & Family Services Partnership with Fire
The City of Fremont Human Services and Fire Departments work together all year long to insure residents have access to appropriate services. Last month, Mandy Zamani, the Senior HelpLine coordinator attended 16 staff meetings to talk to all shifts of the Fire Department. Ms. Zamani and the Fire staff discussed how the City's fire first responders can support older adults and their families who need more than medical care. While an individual may need medical attention for a fall, the Human Services Department can help that individual install grab bars in their home to prevent any further injury. Through this important partnership, the Fire Department can help those in need learn about the Senior Helpline.
