Ask the Bishop
Q: What is the best part about being our bishop, and what is the worst?
A: If "best" refers to the aspects of this ministry that provide the most consistent delight, it is definitely the opportunity I have to be with different worshiping communities on most Sunday mornings. I love to bring greetings and words of thanks to the congregations of this synod. I am humbled by the privilege of preaching and presiding in worship.

Let's get to 65% before April 30!
We are at 52.9% and only need 30 more eligible ELCA-Primary health plan members and spouses to complete the confidential
Mayo Clinic Health Assessment. Taking the assessment will help our synod's congregations and organizations save a collective $43,000 on ELCA health contributions in 2014.
You will also benefit from taking the assessment. By taking the health assessment you are taking stock of your health and will earn $150 in wellness dollars.

Quilters create works that comfort the community
Hundreds of quilts created at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Davenport, tenderly wrap babies, comfort the sick and provide warmth and a reminder of God's love to Quad-Citians from all walks of life.
Candy Bates, a St. Mark member, established "Quilters 4 Christ" in 1998 as an outreach "to those in need of a warm hug." The congregation donates fabrics, threads and yarn to a dedicated group of artistic women who have made and donated hundreds of quilts. "The group of sewers has changed over the years, but the warm smiles and thankful facial expressions the quilters receive when a quilt is wrapped around a recipient never has changed," Bates says. "In the beginning we focused on single-sized quilts for at-risk teenagers" who lived in Valley Shelter, a Quad-City facility that later closed. Keep reading...

Act of Indescribable Beauty
In her Easter column, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton says there is no place for the empty promise of the "Name It and Claim It Health and Wealth Gospel." Jesus' crucifixion was neither pretty nor happy, but was "an act of indescribable beauty." Read her column from The Lutheran's April issue.
