Feeding Hungry People One Garden at a Time
"When a church has a garden in their lawn, it is an outward reflection of the light of God. Our lawns are about doing God's work. Our lawns are about feeding hungry people. And there is no greater joy than to serve God." Sonia Kendrick, Feed Iowa First
One of the most fulfilling parts of working for the Southeastern Iowa Synod is hearing the stories of how congregations are living out our synod's mission of helping hungry hearts find bread. As an anti-hunger synod we are committed to supporting and starting feeding ministries in our communities.
At Ascension Lutheran Church in Marion there is a growing passion to stop hunger in the community. Keep reading...

2014 Mission Support Forms
God is calling us into the world to do God's work in Christ's name. It is your faithful support that makes this work possible. Your Mission Support offering makes it possible for synods and churchwide ministries to keep ongoing commitments to ministry partners near and far and to respond where needs are greatest. Mission Support is the lifeblood of the work that God does through the ELCA. In 2012, ELCA members gave $1.8 billion in regular offerings to support God's mission and ministry through the three expressions of the ELCA: Congregations, Synods, Churchwide Organization.
After November 1, congregation leaders will receive their 2014 Mission Support form. The form should be filled out and returned to the Synod Office between January 15-February 15, 2014. The form can also be filled out online by clicking here.

The Lutheran: November Supplement
The Southeastern Iowa Synod insert is a part of the November issue of The Lutheran. In November's insert, Bishop Burk reflects on how worship brings us together as a community in Christ. "When we worship, we encounter the one in whose name we serve. And at our best, we take it to the streets so the whole world will know that we are not just communities of faith. We are communities in Christ." Read more...

Martin Luther King Day - January 20, 2014
"I should be outraged by the "not guilty" verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman, but I can't feel the outrage. I was not and still am not surprised at the verdict." Pr. Lyle Kleman
This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the sweeping civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion, or national origin. Our laws, institutions, economy and attitudes have come a long way since that time. Yet recent events, such as the George Zimmerman case, show that we view life, and each other, through a lens that is marred by historical events and our own unique understanding and experience. It reveals that we still need to make space for healing, and that we will mutually benefit from a shared conversation around race.
