An Evening with the Bishop

I invite you to join me for an evening of conversation and fellowship. We will gather around the theme that flows out of our synod assembly, "When Hungry Hearts Find Bread."

Bishop Michael Burk

These evenings are precious opportunities for enhancing the mission we share. In addition to sharing my thoughts and hopes for ministry, I look forward to the opportunity to talk and dream about how our connections to one another in Christ can bring to expression a bold and hopeful witness to our communities and the whole world.

"God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday

We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. On Sept 8, congregations from our synod will be joining nearly 10,000 congregations, and 65 synods for a dedicated day of service as part of the ELCA's year-long 25th anniversary celebration.

Congregations in our synod will be volunteering at local food pantries, leading bible studies, cleaning up neighborhoods, and making quilts. We want to share how congregations in the Southeastern Iowa Synod are being God's hands and feet in their communities. Please send your pictures from "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday to Minda Davison, Director for Communications, to davison@seiasynod.org. The pictures will be shared on the synod's Facebook page and in the

E-Newsletter. Please include a caption for each photo.

On Sept 8, you can tweet @seiasynod and use #godsworkourhands.

Faith in Action
VBS
Counselors from EWALU Bible Camp led a week long day camp at Bethany Lutheran in West Branch. The theme for the week was "Faith Alive" and children learned how they can keep their faith alive through the bible, worship, service to others, and hospitality.

the theme "God's work. Our hands." was carried out during the week. An offering was taken for the ELCA Malaria Campaign, the youth made over 60 cards for residents at the local nursing home, and the "God's Work. Our Hands." sign will be used as Bethany Lutheran gears up to join with other congregations of our synod and the ELCA in the day of service on Sept. 8.

Like Bethany Lutheran, congregations in Southeast Iowa are actively carrying out God's work through ministry programs, and we want to share your stories of Faith in Action. To share how your congregation is carrying out God's work, contact Minda Davison, Director for Communications, at davison@seiasynod.org for more information.
"A Place at the Table"

As part of being an anti-hunger synod, the Hunger Working Group has purchased several copies of the documentary,
"A Place at the Table" for congregations to borrow and show in their community.

"A Place at the Table" tells, in a direct and gripping way, the story of three families who maintain their dignity even as they struggle to eat. If you are interested in borrowing a copy of this documentary, contact Julie Honsey, a member of the Hunger Working Group, at jlhreader@aol.com for more information.

Take The Plunge to Geneva and Taize

Take The Plunge May 28-June 9, 2014, into a deeper spirituality. The Plunge is an experience for young adults (ages 18-35) to deepen spirituality through engagement in the global church. Participants will travel to Geneva and Switzerland visiting The Lutheran World Federation and World Council of Churches offices, learning about ways in which our congregations are part of the global church. A week will also be spent at the ecumenical Taize monastery in southern France, worshiping and living in community with the global church.

You can read reflections by 2013 participants and find more information and an application form here.
