Love Like Jesus Makes a Difference
by Pr. Eric Carlson

The Southeastern Iowa Synod and Grand View University sponsored a service leadership event for high school youth June 20-23, 2013 in Des Moines.  Love Like Jesus engaged close to 60 youth and adults from across the synod in leadership development, Bible study, service outreach and worship.

A Call to Diaconal Ministry
by Steven Rippentrop

I am working at Grady Health System.  It is the county hospital that takes care of the under-served and uninsured.  Working there is a terrible gift.  Lack of resources, culture conflict, laughter, and tears.  Each moment in clinic feels like a rich blend of grace and a deep desire to evoke some sort of creation ex nihilo.  I am confronted by injustice compounded by poor decisions that, at times, show patterns through generations.  The broken hearts, dreams, and bodies consistently ask the question of justice and god's actions in the world.  Re-framing questions of why Bad things happen to good people to why do good things happen to bad people is an academic bandage, but lacks the balm.  It seems they, instead, stand on Gilead bearing witness to all of this brokenness.

At times it feels like we are tasked with holding back a river.  The sheer impossibility of the task makes me rethink its definition and boundaries.  I am currently working on applying for grant funding to siphon off some of this river.  I hope to start a pilot project that will provide education and asthma inhalers free of charge to those that are most at risk.  Doing so, may actually save the institution money and improve the health of the people we serve.

I have a deep call to Word and service.  This manifests in my vocation world view.  I am deeply grateful for this indelibly colored lens.
