U.S. Tornadoes
Lutheran Disaster Response

Tornadoes have ripped through Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa and Texas claiming many lives and damaging hundreds of homes.

A two-mile-wide tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., claiming lives and leaving behind a devastating trail of destruction. Plaza Towers Elementary School stood right in the path of the storm's 166-200 mph winds.

2014 ELCA Domestic Hunger Grant Applications Now Available

Funds from the ELCA World Hunger Appeal are set aside annually for Domestic Hunger Grants for projects in one of four areas: advocacy, development, community organizing, and relief.   Four grants were awarded to projects serving needs within the Southeastern Iowa Synod for 2013.

Applications for Domestic Hunger Grants for projects in 2014 are now available
online at www.elca.org/domestichungergrants.   The deadline for applications is July 17, 2013. Application materials postmarked after the July 17 deadline will not be considered for funding in 2014.

We are grateful for the partnership with the churchwide organization which these grants demonstrate, and for the on-going support congregations and individuals give to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

For additional information contact Pastor Paul Ostrem at ostrem@seiasynod.org. Any groups or ministries which address poverty should consider applying for a grant. The maximum amount for a grant is $6000. Additional information may also be obtained from the churchwide office, contact number 1-800-638-3522.

Circle of Protection Letter: Not Too Late to Sign!
ELCA Advocacy

In the face of historic deficits, the nation faces unavoidable choices about how to balance needs and resources and allocate burdens and sacrifices. These choices are economic, political - and moral. The ELCA is a charter member of the Circle of Protection, a coalition committed to resist budget cuts that undermine the lives, dignity and rights of poor and vulnerable people at home and abroad.

The ELCA e-Advocacy Network and the Circle of Protection encourage rostered leaders to join the growing Circle by adding their signatures to a pastoral letter to President Obama and and congressional leaders addresses seven points of faith-grounded counsel on budget negotiations.

If you or your pastors have not signed this letter, please sign today. Be sure to select the "Evangelical Lutheran Church in America" option when asked to identify denominational affiliation.
