violence
Pastoral Letter on Violence adopted by
ELCA Conference of Bishops on March 4, 2013

Every faithful caregiver who sits with victims of violence knows what we know - as God's church, we are called to reduce violence and should, in most cases, restrain ourselves from using violence. Whether or not statistics show that overall violence has declined in recent years, every person wounded or killed is a precious child of God.

As bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, we lament the tragedy of gun violence in our country. We are grieved by the way violence threatens and destroys life. We affirm the current soul searching and shared striving to find a way to a better future.

Holy Week Worship for Rostered Leaders
Monday, March 25, 2013
Bethany Lutheran Church, West Branch, Iowa

As in past years, Bishop Burk invites rostered leaders to take time to gather with colleagues for a service of Holy Communion on Monday of Holy Week, March 25, at 11:00 am. Whether this is among the busiest days of the year or a much needed day of sabbath rest, this once-a-year gathering is for the sake of nourishing the servants who regularly offer nourishment to the people of God.

We will worship at Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch.  As in previous years, this service will include the affirmation of vocational promises. While this service of Word and Sacrament will provide nourishment for the week ahead, especially the Three Days, time with colleagues is also nourishing. So please consider remaining after worship for lunch at Bethany. Lunch will be provided by the women of Bethany for $5 (or a donation of your choosing). If you plan to stay for lunch, please RSVP to Lori Uhl (uhl@seiasynod.org or 319.338.1273) no later than Wednesday, March 20.

ELCA World Hunger: Ethics of Eating Event
April 11 - 14, 2013 in Rockford, IL

Henry Martinez, ELCA World Hunger-Hunger Education Associate

ELCA World Hunger is hosting an Ethics of Eating event in Region 5 (near Rockford, Ill.) April 11-14, 2013.
This event is an opportunity for ELCA Lutherans to explore food issues and systems through speakers and visits to rural and urban agricultural sites. Additionally, we hope the participants of this Ethics of Eating event will be able to further connect with ELCA World Hunger and engage their local communities (campus ministries, congregations, camps, etc.) following the event.

Book of Faith Update from Diane Jacobson

From One Mission Blog of Beth Lewis, Augsburg Fortress

The initiative continues to progress and in some ways to thrive. Recently a number of us met together to take stock of where we have been and what the future might yet bring.

Here are some examples of where we have been:

In general the Book of Faith initiative is recognized throughout the ELCA as an initiative that encourages widespread, creative, and deep engagement with Scripture. We have some reported evidence of renewed engagement.  The fourfold method of asking questions has some legs.  Even some of our less successful efforts have sometimes given us inspiration and spurred other ideas.
