  Jim RobinsonBrian Cohen Featured Article

Brian Cohen, chairman of the New York Angels group and a lead investor in Pinterest, well exemplifies the new undercurrent of entrepreneurial energy that's resurfaced in the Big Apple. I interviewed Cohen at his cool co-working office space to get his thoughts on the startup scene in NYC and hear more about his new  book, "What Every Angel Investor Wants You To Know."

Cohen believes angel investing has developed from what used to be "stupid money" and no "do diligence."

For a well-rounded perspective on the New York City startup and venture investing scene, there's few who could top James D. Robinson IV. One of the Big Apple's larger and more active venture capital firms, RRE Ventures has backed dozens of startups, including 15 deals in 2012. Having worked in both Silicon Valley and New York City, Robinson knows investing styles coast to coast will never meet.

Sean Besser Dave Otten

My interview with Alex Iskold, the founder and CEO of GetGlue, got off to a rocky start when I realized that I'd lost my new Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. Panicked, I dumped all the contents of my purse onto the conference table - no luck. Observing the chaos, Alex responded in a calm voice, 'it's just a phone, don't panic.'

That sort of cool rationality probably served him well when a merger with a competitor did not go through early this year over a mismatch. GetGlue has continued innovating at this social TV startup.

Continuing on my journey of exploration, I met with Dave Otten, the CEO of a New York-based startup with the intriguing name of LongTail Video.

We met in a trendy caf on W. 18th Street in the Flatiron district. Over coffee,  Dave described what LongTail Video does and how it has ramped up since 2007 into a profitable, 30-person shop that was recently lead financed with $5 million from Greycroft Partners. It's little wonder that Dave McClure is opening a new co-working space for his 500 startups in the Flatiron district!
