What's in YOUR water?

Urban Water Institute high school intern, Megan Keil, (Olathe North Geosciences 21st Century Program) is currently working with Institute staff to examine and assess water quality monitoring protocols across the metro.

Megan will be conducting water-related research as part of her class requirements during the course of the year.

Highlights around campus

  • We reached two very exciting milestones in November relevant to our mission in building an educated workforce in health, agriculture and the life sciences: since our opening in April 2011, 10,000 K-12 students and educators have participated in programs at K-State Olathe, and 40,000 people have attended conferences, professional development and training programs.
  • K-State's College of Business Administration hosts professional education opportunities at the Olathe campus. The next seminar in February will be on the topic of sales, followed by finance and sales seminars in March and April. More information and registration.
  • The K-State Olathe Incubator Kitchen collaborated on a scale-up of sauerkraut production and commercialization with Hoganville Family Farms in October. Over 34,000 pounds of cabbage were processed resulting in 25,000 pounds of jarred sauerkraut. An excess of 7,000 pounds of fresh whole cabbage was donated to Harvesters
and two other local food pantries.
Merck Animal Health, K-State collaborate to open Microbial Surveillance Lab at Olathe campus

A ribbon cutting on November 15 marked the grand opening of K-State Olathe's Microbial Surveillance Lab, a collaboration between Merck Animal Health and K-State's Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Read more about this new lab.
Urban Farming Guys, Sea Life Aquarium, Urban Water Institute flood K-State with water ideas

Jason Fields, CEO of Fields, LLC, and co-founder of The Urban Farming Guys, grows tilapia and basil on his innovative urban farm combining food production with the use of urban land and collected rain water. Aaron Sprowl, Curator at SeaLife Aquarium, K-State Olathe and the Urban Water Institute think he's onto something.

A partnership is underway to research this model of urban farming and developing public educational programs on water use, water quality, fish production and nutritive value, consumer appeal, and nutrient uptake by plants grown in these integrated systems.

Workforce Development Series to combine           K-State, industry experts to build on-the-job skills

Kansas State University Olathe and Aerotek Scientific will offer a four-month series bringing industry and K-State experts to the Olathe campus to address hot topics in today's changing workforce for both early and mid-late career job seekers: resume building, interview skills, and networking among them.

More information and registration.
