Flood Insurance Feedback Request

Congressman Morgan Griffith wants your feedback! RVAR members have been requested to help provide real life accounts detailing the impact of the recent changes in flood insurance costs. Please take a moment to share actual data relating to: (1) The impact the cost of flood insurance has on property values and sales (please share examples of deals gone south or buyers unable to qualify due to the cost) (2) The impact of FEMA restrictions relating to renovation, expansion or development of existing property (3) Examples of actual premium increases (4) Challenges in the current FEMA process for having property removed from a flood designated map.

This information will be provided to Congressman Morgan Griffith in late March. Please submit your information to Laura Benjamin or Janie Whitlow by March 15th.

Roanoke County Flood Insurance Rate Maps

Roanoke County submits an annual application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which provides a reduction in flood insurance premiums to communities that meet their standards. As part of this application process, Roanoke County is required to annually publicize its services to REALTORS®, lenders and insurance agents.

Federal law requires the purchase of flood insurance, as a condition of federally backed mortgages for properties located in the special flood hazard area (100 year flood levels). You may contact Roanoke County's Department of Community Development (772-7906 ext. 234) for flood insurance rate map information. Or you may access the County's tax maps at www.roanokecountyva.gov, under the Community Development icon, to see those properties located within the 100 year floodplain as well as elevation certificates for most residential structures.

The following free booklets are available by calling FEMA (800-480-2520): National Flood Insurance Program, Guide to Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Mandatory Purchase of Flood Insurance.

RVAR Community Service Day - March 6th

Join In & Help Make A Difference!

The 2015 Community Service Committee needs your help by volunteering just a little of your time throughout the year!  The Community Service Committee has established four RVAR Community Service Days for 2015 with the goal of helping one of our supported charities each quarter.  The charities scheduled for 2015 are Feeding America Southwest Virginia, Rebuilding Together Roanoke, Apple Ridge

Farm and the Community Christmas Store of the Roanoke Valley.

Our first RVAR Community Service Day will be Friday, March 6th at Feeding America Southwest Virginia (1025 Electric Road, Salem, VA 24153).  There will be two opportunities to volunteer that day either from 9:00AM - 12 Noon or 1:00PM - 4:00PM and lunch will be provided.  Our primary service will be helping to inspect and sort dented cans, crushed boxes, or other superficially damaged food to ensure the food inside is safe.  Please click here to sign up for the AM Shift. Please click here to sign up for the PM Shift. Or call RVAR to have us register you for a shift of your choice.
Feeding America Southwest Virginia's mission is to feed Southwest Virginia's hungry through a network of partners and engage our region in the fight to end hunger. They distribute more than 20 million pounds of food annually to nearly 400 partner agency soup kitchens, rescue missions and food pantries throughout the 26 counties and associated municipalities that make up Southwest Virginia.

Next RVAR Community Service Day : Help with Rebuilding Together Roanoke on Saturday, April 25th.  More details to follow.
