Roanoke City Named One of Top Places to Retire
Congratulations to Roanoke City, named #6 on the Top 10 Best Places to Retire list, by Livability.com, a national website that ranks quality of life and travel amenities of America's small and mid-sized cities. Roanoke was the only Virginia City to make this list. Roanoke was chosen "because it exposes older adults to new experiences -- keeping them active, engaged, healthy and inspired. The City offers a host of quality of life amenities appealing to seniors -- from arts and cultural activities, outdoor recreation opportunities, top-notch medical facilities to economic assets, such as continuing education and lower cost of living."

Home Sales to Hold Steady in 2014
Home sales in the greater Roanoke Valley remain strong. October home sales as recorded by the Roanoke Valley MLS total 377, the highest October total since October, 2007. Likewise, the number of homes placed under contract in October, 383, is the highest October total since 2007. A link to the monthly statistics, along with a 3-year comparison, is provided on the front page of RVAR.com.
National predictions are for homes sales to hold steady in 2014, while prices continue to rise, according to NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun, speaking at the recent NAR Convention. He expects the national median existing-home price, currently at $197,000, to increase nearly 6 percent next year.
Mortgage interest rates are expected to trend upward and reach 5.4 by the end of next year. With higher mortgage interest rates, he expects refinancings to collapse in 2014 to the lowest level in at least 15 years, and hopes purchase applications will begin to rise. He noted that "even with cheap mortgages for the past four years, all-cash buyers stayed high, accounting for over 30 percent of sales nationwide."
Limited supplies remain a big factor, with inventory bouncing around 13-year lows, and seriously delinquent mortgages have been trending steadily down. "Housing starts are the only way to alleviate inventory shortages. Housing starts need to rise 50 percent to meet underlying demand," according to Yun.

Brokers: Sign up for VAR's Student Intern Program at Virginia Tech
VAR is proud to announce its partnership with the Virginia Tech Program in Real Estate and the launch of a new student internship program for Virginia Tech students and Virginia REALTOR® brokerages. Enrollment is now open until Wednesday, January 8, 2014. The program is designed to give students seeking a degree in real estate an opportunity to obtain first-hand, practical knowledge of the real estate industry through direct exposure to the operations of brokerages throughout the state. Through this program, students will learn the challenges and the rewards of a career in real estate. Click here to learn more about the program and to sign up to participate. This opportunity was developed by the 2013 Class of the Virginia REALTOR® Leadership Academy. Special thanks to Adam Lynch of Prudential Waterfront Properties, a recent graduate of the 2013 VLA class, for his work on this project.

Best Real Estate Apps
NAR's Center for REALTOR® Technology recently launched a website -- Repurposed Apps: Your Mobile Real Estate Community. The site is a cool new place for members to recommend and rate apps for iPhones and Androids. Users can log in with their NRDS ID and browse apps by category, see what others recommend and why, and check out an app's specs and ratings from the iTunes Store and Google Play store.
