From the USCTA...
On behalf of the USCTA Board, I'm saddened to report that Jay Schochet passed away on March 24th. A great supporter of our game, Jay served on the boards of the National Tennis Club and U.S. Court Tennis Preservation Foundation and was also a long time advocate of the professional game. He established the most coveted professional tournament trophy in our game, the Schochet Cup, as part of the US Professional Singles. We extend our condolences and best wishes to his wife Suzy and the Schochet family.
Sincerely,

Jeremy Wintersteen

From the USCTPF...

The Foundation marks the passing of Jay Schochet, a great friend of tennis and an inspiration to many. In partnership with his wife, Suzy, Jay's contribution's to tennis in the areas of promoting top flight professional competition, support for the work of Foundation, and support of the National Tennis Club, are without parallel. Beyond the generous financial gifts was the additional desire to bring out the best in others. Jay was a great proponent of the values of good sportsmanship and often said that those values in our game were the prime motivator for him and his philanthropy.

Most are aware of Jay's, and Suzy's, long time support of the U.S. Pro Singles playing for the Schochet Cup. Less of us know of their creation of a meaningful endowment held by the USCTPF to address supporting (non-prize money) expenses for the event ensuring world class tennis will be present in Newport for years to come.

In addition, Jay and Suzy were consistent long term supporters of projects at the NTC. Others may write about those in greater detail. Jay also encouraged the raising of an endowment pool to cover administrative expenses for the USCTPF with a major matching gift.

The future of the Professional game, the NTC, and the USCTPF are much better off by virtue of The Schochet's generosity, leadership by example and inspiration to others.

Many have done much for the game over the years but few have had such meaningful impact.

Bill McLaughlin
Chairman
