Greenbush - Homeschool families will have an opportunity to meet award-winning children's book author and illustrator Lita Judge and learn more about her books at Wade House historic site from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The fun-filled day will include a book-centered tour of the site, an author talk and book signing.

Homeschoolers are invited to meet award-winning children's book author and illustrator at Wade House Historic Site on Thursday, Oct. 8th.

Judge, who spent much of her childhood in the north woods of Wisconsin, speaks across the country about her work as an author and illustrator of more than a dozen fiction and nonfiction children's picture books including Born in the Wild, Flight School and Red Sled. Her books have received numerous awards including the Sterling North Award, the Jane Addams Honor, ALA Notable and Kirkus Best of. She enjoys teaching both writing and illustration to students of all ages and shares much about her creative process in classrooms and on her blog and website. Judge lives with her husband, two cats and a little green parrot named Beatrix in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
This book-centered event at Wade House will begin with a book-in-hand tour of the site from 8:30 a.m. to noon. This special tour approach will help homeschool children make connections between the history presented at Wade House and the stories shared in several of Lita Judge's books.
Visiting locations in our stagecoach inn, sawmill and carriage museum, participants will look closely at selected books by Judge, including One Thousand Tracings, Red Hat, Yellowstone Moran, Born in the Wild, Bird Talk, Pennies for Elephants, How Big Were Dinosaurs, and Born to Be Giants.
At one of the tour stops, homeschoolers will discover and listen to portions of Judge's One Thousand Tracings. Children will hear about how during the aftermath of World War II a kind American family sent relief packages to struggling European survivors.
At another tour stop, participants will hear passages from Judge's book, Yellowstone Moran: Painting the American West, and learn about Thomas Moran, a young artist who recorded the vast beauty of the west when he traveled with a group of explorers to the Rocky Mountains in the summer of 1871.
Following the tour and after a short lunch break, Judge will be at the site to present her program, One Thousand Tracings. In this talk, homeschool families will discover Judge's grandparents' story. They were Wisconsin ornithologists and the inspiration for her picture book, One Thousand Tracings. Judge will also talk about how she became an author, where she gets her ideas, and how she does her research.
Once the author talk concludes, a book signing will follow.
The book-in-hand tour of the site costs $5 for children ages 5 and up. Parents and children ages 4 and under are free. The author talk and book signing are free for all participants. Homeschoolers are encouraged to bring two gently used or new clothing items to receive the chance to be entered into a drawing for a signed copy of Judges' One Thousand Tracings. All clothing will be donated to local shelters. Preregistration is required for this event. There are limited spaces so reservations will be taken on first-come, first-served basis. This event is presented by Wade House in partnership with the Sheboygan Children's Book Festival, which is a free public celebration of books and reading featuring author talks, art-making with illustrators, writing workshops, musical entertainment, book sales and signings, plus fun children's activities and more. Besides this book-centered program at Wade House, festival events take place at John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Bookworm Gardens and Mead Public Library.
