Around the Campfire  Roger Hutton

Well another month has flown by and here it is March. And the Lord has blessed us with more rain. Texas Longhorn breeders are beginning to visualize those green pastures that are not far away. Many of you are readying your show animals for the shows that are just a short time away and others are readying your cattle for the spring sales that have already started. In either case, I wish you well with your entries.

I told you in February that we were drawing close to selection of the location and venue for our 2012 Convention and Championship Show. Well, mark your calendars and start planning your vacation time. The ITLA and the TLMA have chosen the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City for our joint Longhorn Extravaganza. The ITLA will hold its Convention and Championship Show in concert with the Longhorn World Championship (LWC), the premier annual horn measurement contest conducted by TLMA. The dates are October 25th through the 28th.  Start planning now to participate in this historic event.

Thank you for taking advantage of our special winter rate program. It was a huge success. We registered significantly more cattle than we normally would through the winter. So, thanks again to all of you who normally register with ITLA and to those of you who took this opportunity to start registering with the ITLA. Your business is appreciated.  Trish and Robin enjoyed working for you to get them done in a very timely manner and with a smile, not only on their faces, but in their voices. We treasure your business. As you know, the winter registration rates ended on February 29th. However, due to the huge response to our special for "dual registrations" we have extended those special rates through the end of the year. See the rate card later in this issue.

While I am talking about registrations, let me tell you that we have concluded our search for a software consultant to rewrite our ITLA Registration Program. We need to do this for administrative reasons, but more importantly we want to make it easier for you to do registrations and transfers by providing on-line capability. We will complete the project in a few months.  At that time you will be able to register, transfer over the internet and manage your pictures on your certificates in an easier manner; a benefit you get only at ITLA. Those of you who participate in our shows will also be able to keep track of the point standings throughout the year on-line. Won't that be fun.

By now those of you who are not already TLMA members have received a complimentary issue of the Texas Longhorn Journal. As you see there is a lot of ITLA news and information now included in the TLJ. The TLMA will provide you this complimentary copy for another couple of months. I hope that in that time you will be pleased with the magazine overall, but particularly with the ITLA news and content, and that you will take advantage of the special TLMA membership rate extended only to our members. By doing this you will continue to receive the TLJ and its ITLA news as a TLMA member.

We have executed on every aspect of our Cooperation Agreement with the TLMA and I know that you will continue to see the benefits it is bringing ITLA members. Bringing our publication efforts together is a significant savings and gives the members of both organizations the benefit of broader industry news, increased circulation and more value for breeders' advertising. But, the one aspect of our cooperation that excites me the most is our Longhorn Extravaganza coming in October, where we will be able to bring the members of both organizations together to enjoy the events of both organizations. This is good business in that it brings economy to both, but more importantly it brings more Texas Longhorn Breeders together in the same place to enjoy each other's interests and fellowship. That's gotta be good for everybody.

Another exciting aspect of 2012 is our youth program. Raelynn Stephens is Chair and Danielle Andrews is Vice Chair of our Youth Committee. Their committee has a great plan for youth activities and for recruiting youth into the ITLA in 2012. Those plans are outlined later in this issue.

I want to extend my personal thanks to all of the Youth Committee for the excitement and vigor you are bringing to our youth program this year. Just think, our young people will work hard showing all year and get to experience a Championship Show in Oklahoma City's Cox Convention Center--the same venue where Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circuses and the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) perform. What a treat and motivation for the kids. Good luck to you all and have fun this year.

Well, that is all the news for now. I look forward to keeping you posted on all of the great things happening at ITLA and will tell you more in April. Until then, God bless you.

Warm Regards,

Roger Hutton

Planning a Profit

by Darol Dickinson

Profiting from Texas LonghornsIt is fun to make a profit in every business. Do we all agree--right up front?

ITLA wants every member to make a profit. Seminars, clinics, educational articles, videos and how-to publications are part of the continuing effort to help members develop a profitable Texas Longhorn program.

Everyone realizes that new ventures require some preparation and study before expecting immediate success. That is the reason the ITLA has produced "Profiting from Raising Texas Longhorn Cattle," an 8-chapter, 29 page book written by experienced Texas Longhorn producers.  This treasure trove of Longhorn lore includes a multitude of ideas about what to and what not to do. To the beginning producer, it will provide a valuable collection of ideas. To the experienced producer, it will still have a few good ideas well worth the investment.

There are chapters dealing with making a Profit Plan--including Seven Ways to Profit, the important Customer File, designing a Marketing Plan, Profitable Advertising, Designing an Ad, Generating Sales and the Competitive Edge--Salesmanship.

Over 90% of all registered cattle are sold privately.  Even though magazines are full of results from "barn burner" sales, still, most cattle sell privately.  Every multiplier of cattle needs to prepare a business plan to include private marketing as well as registered auctions.  Average quality cattle and stock of low appeal should be sold privately rather than going public.  Notably, more famous high-dollar bulls have sold privately than at auction. There is a place to sell for target reasons--this book helps identify the reasons.

The "Profit Book" is a must read, and a fast read.
Contact ITLA at Box 2610, Glen Rose, Texas 76043.  Send $8 plus $1 for postage.
Buy the book and good things will start to happen!

ITLA Youth's President's Message

by Cally Cox

Our Youth Co-Chairs, Raelynn Stephens and Danielle Andrews have challenged Shelby and me to help our youth members to realize how the Longhorn cattle are just as important today as they were in the past.

I work for the Elliott Dyer Ranch, located south of Albany, Texas. This ranch raises over 300 mother cows each year and sells the calves across the United States to feedlots.

Longhorn bull for AngusWhen I started working for them I was surprised to see longhorn bulls with registered Angus cows. I asked the Ranch Manager why they were using longhorn bulls instead of registered Angus bulls. Her answer was:

  • they can service 30 cows each with no problem
  • good premium for crossbred calves
  • resistance to diseases
  • good fertility
  • less calving problems
  • hustle their own food
  • use them for 4-5 years before replacing

She also told me other large ranches in this area of West Texas were using longhorn bulls on Herefords, Charolais and Angus cows. Hope you found this information interesting as I did.

We are looking for youth who would like to join our ITLA Family please contact:

Dear Texas Longhorn Lovers,

Welcome to the 2012 Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale VIII - the most extravagant event of the year for Longhorn breeders and enthusiasts across the country! Year after year, this extraordinary sale has continued to excite the Longhorn industry by establishing new records and setting the highest dollar averages in the business. This is possibly because only the finest quality Longhorn cattle are selected for the Legacy - a group of cattle which draws an audience of over 500 of the top breeders from across the nation.

Each year, the Legacy Sale features Longhorn cattle that set new standards for the breed. As you look over this year's sale offerings, be sure to take note of the outstanding consignments from many of the most successful Longhorn programs in the country. There are the cattle that can be beneficial to every breeder - both old and new - and can often boost a breeding program to new levels.

This year, the Legacy will again be hosted at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Hotel in Richardson, Texas. Located in north Dallas, the Hyatt offers a perfect venue for this special event, with spacious dining and lounge areas. Plus, it is convenient to shopping and many other attractions nearby. The friendly Hyatt management and staff are committed to providing you a very special weekend.

Legacy Sale Logo So join us for a fun weekend surrounded by good friends in a great hotel. You'll be surrounded by fun people, great food, excitement, and best of all - breath-taking Longhorns. It is one-of-a-kind event that could only take place with Texas Longhorn cattle and the people who love them!

On behalf of all the sponsors of the 2012 Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale VIII, thank you for being here. We hope you have a great time!

Sincerely,

The Sponsors of the Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale VIII

A man was travelling down a country road when he saw a large crowd of ranchers gathering outside a local homestead.  It was such a large crowd he just had to pull over to find out what was happening.

As he and others gathered near the farmhouse, he asked the man next to him what was going on.  The rancher replied, "Ol' Jed's bull done kicked his mother-in-law and she died."

"Oh, I'm so sorry," said the man, "She must have had a lot of friends."

"Naw," replied the Rancher, "We all want to try to buy that bull !"
