Stories from the Hotline: Disabled and Struggling

The Hotline received a call from a disabled father of four children, living in Virginia Beach, VA. He is unable to work at all. His wife works two jobs but isn't earning enough to cover all of their expenses. The rental home they live in is due to have electric and heat cut off. He needed summer meals for his children. The Hotline advocate found a couple of meal sites in his neighborhood. He wasn't aware that the National Hunger Hotline could provide more help than he initially called for- but despite his embarrassment, frustration and tears- the Hotline advocate encouraged him to share his story and was able to provide him with addresses for local soup kitchens, food pantries and even resources for rental assistance. The advocate was so pleased to send a follow up email with a lot of additional information to help him and his family.
Bruce Springsteen Kicks Off Summer Meals Rock For Kids Campaign with WhyHunger

Bruce Springsteen, Chicago, Chef Aarón Sánchez, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, Paul McCartney, Zac Brown Band and other activists are teaming up with WhyHunger, a leader in the fight against hunger and poverty, to kick off the Summer Meals Rock for Kids campaign to raise funds and awareness to fight childhood hunger in the US this summer.

Bruce Springsteen officially kicked off the campaign by launching an auction for tickets and E Street Lounge passes to select dates on his High Hopes tour, raising over $41,000 to date. Springsteen is also supporting WhyHunger through a limited edition "Born To Run" t-shirt that is co-branded with WhyHunger and is being sold on tour and via his online store.

"We are thrilled to have so many artists, activists and friends rallying around the Summer Meals Rock for Kids campaign to ensure that all kids have access to healthy meals to keep their bodies and minds active this summer," said Bill Ayres, co-founder and executive director of WhyHunger. "We believe that everyone, especially our children, should have the right to nutritious food and are fighting for a day when every American has that right." Read more here

Senior Hunger on the Rise

The National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH) has released a new study entitled The State of Senior Hunger in America 2012: An Annual Report, which revealed that 15.3 percent of seniors or 9.3 million individuals in the United States faced the threat of hunger in 2012. In just five years from 2007 to 2012, the number of seniors facing the threat of hunger increased by 49%. The report, which contains the most recent statistics on senior hunger, attempts to raise awareness on this issue.
