Navigating Traditions & Plans: Grief in the Summer
a young girl in TCR peer support group remembers a special summer tradition with her dad
Along with holidays and school breaks, summer is a busy season for weddings, vacations, and graduation celebrations.

But for those who are grieving, summer can also be a time that brings feelings of loss.

Just as children will re-grieve the loss of someone close to them in different ways as they grow older, the changing of the seasons may bring changes in your grief process.

There might be summer traditions you want to keep, such as visiting a special place you shared together or sampling their favorite ice cream, but you might also want to start new traditions as a family.

Summer camps specifically for grieving children, teens, and families can also be a helpful activity.

Being at camp with others who have experienced a death can break the isolation children and teens feel. It can also provide their parent or caregiver with an opportunity to take care of themselves while knowing their children are being supported.

The Children's Room collects information each year on summer camps for grieving families. Some camps are for children of specific ages and some camps are even for the whole family at once. Learn more on our website.

There is no one way or right way to cope with grief in the summer - or at any time of the year.

Applications are being accepted for our Fall 2014 Volunteer Facilitator Training, which starts Friday, September 5th.

Application is required to attend, and completion of training does not guarantee group placement.

All applicants with interest in volunteering in our family peer support groups must complete the mandatory training.

A Year After Sebastian
Sebastian, June 2013
The Children's Room is honored to be chosen as the beneficiary for a fundraiser honoring the first birthday of Sebastian.

On July 6th Rachael Mayo-Smith will take part in her first Ironman event - a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run - to raise money for The Children's Room.

Her efforts are in honor of her friend Laurie, whose son Sebastian was born in June of last year and died just eight days later.

When Laurie and her husband were at a loss for how to talk to their young daughter about the death of Sebastian, they came to TCR for a consultation with our Education Director, Deborah Rivlin.

Laurie said, "Not only did we leave with examples of specific language to use with our daughter and an understanding of what's developmentally appropriate for her, but we experienced that supportive and understanding - and I'd add compassionate - environment."

Local Congregation Makes Donation to TCR
The Children's Room is grateful to the First Parish of Lexington, MA for their recent generosity.

We were invited to speak at their April 6th service through their Social Action Ministry. Members of the congregation contributed $2,300 to support TCR's work with grieving families.

If your religious or social organization would like to learn about or support The Children's Room, let us know!
Our Heartfelt Thanks

We are grateful to so many of you whose support enables all that we do here at The Children's Room.

At the close of our 2013-14 program year, we'd like to say a special thank you to:

  • TCR's wonderful volunteer facilitators, who make a difference in the lives of grieving families by helping in peer support groups every other week at The Children's Room. These groups wouldn't be possible without you!

The Children's Room has partnered with Donate for Charity to make it fast and easy to donate your old vehicle to TCR. Your vehicle will be picked up - free of charge! - from anywhere and TCR will receive a donation in the amount of the vehicle's value.
