I hope that your fall semester is going well.  It was great to see so many of you at our opening day breakfast. I heard many of you say that it was a good idea for all of the district staff to be together.  It was a time to reacquaint ourselves with friends we haven't seen for a while.  Our district needs more activities that bring the colleges and District Office staff together.

I am pleased that enrollments are strong at both campuses.  While we are just slightly below last year, we can make that up in the spring and summer sessions.  We have been marketing in the local media to let the community know that we are expanding our class offerings and it's a time of growth.  Our public relations program has placed our district in the local newspapers on a regular basis.

I want to keep in touch with you and continue to communicate what's happening at the district office.  My goal is transparency in our operations.  So please let me know how we can continue to do better.  Please keep in touch with my work as Chancellor via Facebook or, I am now on Twitter.

There is a great deal to be proud of within our district.  Good work is being done at all levels.  Let's celebrate our accomplishments and feel good about our work to benefit the community.

Sincerely,

Bruce Baron
Chancellor

Welcome Stacey Nikac to Chancellor's Office

Stacey comes to us from private industry where she has worked as an Office Manager and Executive Assistant.  Stacey has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management.

I am sure you will all help me to welcome Stacey as she joins our SBCCD family.  Stacey can be reached at 909-382-4091.  Her email address is snikac@sbccd.org.

We wish Jackie a happy new life in retirement.  We will miss her very much!

SBCCD opens new Entrepreneur Institute of San Bernardino

The Entrepreneur Institute of San Bernardino will hold its first skills-based module beginning September 3rd.  This not-for-credit program will teach students the skills necessary to become small business owners.

Through six modules, the program will deliver skills in business plan development, marketing, financing, management, and what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

The program costs $395 for all six modules.  Thanks to a grant from the WalMart Foundation, scholarships are available, with additional hours of mentoring, for those who cannot afford the fees.

The program was developed in partnership between the Economic Development and Corporate Training Program and the SBVC Business Department.

Visit the website at www.eiosb.com for more information.

Student Success - CHC Left Lane Project. It Works!
Last year, I challenged both colleges to develop a student success proposal that utilized the recommendations of the Student Success Task Force.  The project was funded by the district through a strategic plan initiative. I asked that the proposals be jointly prepared by the college administration and the Faculty Senate.

Crafton Hills College submitted a proposal for The Left Lane. The Left Lane brought the additional elements that research shows help students be successful.  These elements include additional counseling, student educational plans, tutoring, learning communities and recognition of success.

After one year, The Left Lane has shown very promising results.  A summary of those results can be see by clicking here For example, Left Lane students were substantially more likely to successfully complete English (82% to 69%) and math (64% to 51%) courses than students in the comparison group.

A second year, with a larger cohort, is taking place now.  We look forward to seeing a positive trend in the data.
FNX Channel Goes National

The First Nation's Experience (FNX) channel is the only television station dedicated to the lives, cultures and histories of indigenous peoples the world over.  FNX was started through a partnership between SBCCD, KVCR and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, who provided the funding for the channel.

FNX Asks You (Ep. 2)
FNX Asks You clip

The state of Alaska joins Oklahoma, Wyoming and other locations to broadcast FNX through the local PBS stations.  We are currently working with PBS Interconnect committee to be able to send the feed out via Satellite to all the stations nationally.  We are also working with DirecTV and Dish TV to carry the FNX signal.

The production team has been crossing the country doing pieces on all the tribes. We are also attending Native American events to get the word out about FNX.

Our program and Acquisitions department has acquired about 1,200 hours of programming.  Our talented production team is creating original programming to air on the channel.

Our goal now is financial sustainability.  We hope to build an endowment to fund the channel in perpetuity.  There is a great deal of interest to contribute to support FNX.

FNX is currently available on VerizonFios (channel 471), DirecTV (channel 24.2), and locally (channel 24.2) with an average of 2 million viewers.
