Week of May 25, 2016 | Issue No. 1
IN THE BAG Tidbits from the staff
On behalf of the Rushton Farm Staff I would like to welcome both new and returning members to the ninth season of the Rushton Farm CSA. Rushton Farm practices an approach to agriculture where conserved land is used to create a sustainable food system that both respects and benefits from the natural resources surrounding the farm. Rushton Farm comprises 6 acres located within the 86-acre Rushton Woods Preserve. It is the vision of Willistown Conservation Trust that this preserve will promote the tremendous resources of this land ranging from the farm fields, woods, meadows, and streams to the important bird habitat. Through our organic methods and sustainable agricultural practices, we hope to show how agriculture can have a beneficial and significant place within a natural ecosystem. Rushton Farm offers its CSA members an opportunity to interact and communicate with the farmers responsible for the food being grown. We invite you to walk the fields and come see what we are doing any time. Todd Alleger is returning as our Agroecology Project Manager and Molly Clark is our apprentice. Eliza Gowen is our Outreach Coordinator and the person responsible for managing the CSA and all the fun activities that take place at Rushton. Each year we have a University student on staff who is working on a research project for their degree. This year our Student Research Apprentice comes from Ecole Superieure d'Agricultures in France. His name is Fabien Richard and he will be joining us in July for a three month study program. In addition, last year's Student Research Apprentice from the University of Pennsylvania, Katie Pflaumer, will be completing her study of plant communities in and around Rushton Farm. It is amazing to think it has been nearly ten years since we started Rushton Farm. It is you, our members, who have made the work so rewarding. Feel free to ask any questions or offer any opinions to us throughout the season. This farm is a community venture in mind, spirit and action and I hope that all of you will make the most of the opportunity to share in the beauty and bounty of a season at the farm. -Fred

RECIPES
10th Anniversary Cookbook - Recipes Wanted!
It's hard to believe that next year will mark 10 years since the CSA began at Rushton Farm. What a wonderful journey it has been. A cookbook is in the works to help celebrate the occasion. We have many recipes in our coffers but would like to have CSA members share a favorite recipe or two. As a CSA member myself, I have been told or overheard many fantastic recipes on pick-up days that I have used countless times over the years. Recipes that use the fruit or vegetables found in our shares are preferred. Please email recipes to Allyson McTear at amctear@verizon.net or place hard copies in the folder in the farmshed by September 2nd. Many thanks and stay tuned for cookbook updates.
