St. John's Men's Ministry Cancellation
The Men's Ministry's first meeting of the new year was to be this Tuesday, November 3. However, our speaker, Rob Greenway, had an unavoidable last minute conflict. But we are happy to announce that Rob will speak on the topic "Islam: Core Beliefs & Practices" at the group's January 5, 2016 meeting. We hope you will join us then for wine and fellowship beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Associate Organist Appointed
I am delighted to be able to announce the appointment of James Carmichael to the position of Associate Organist of St. John's, with effect from Sunday, November 8, 2015. James joins us following the appointment of our former Associate, Nick Herrin, as Organist and Choirmaster of James House of Prayer here in Tampa.

James has been Organist and Choirmaster of Apostles Lutheran Church, ECLA, in Brandon, FL, since 2004. Previously, he held similar positions in Virginia and San Francisco. He began his music career as University Organist and Instructor of Music at Mercer University, Macon, Georgia, and Staff Artist at Bay View Conservatory of Music, Petoskey, Michigan. He holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in organ performance from Mars Hill College and the University of Oklahoma, studying with, among others, Gerhard Krapf and Mildred Andrews.

Please join us in welcoming James to the St. John's community.

Meet the Author!
Ladies, mark your calendars!! Meet the author of our women's advent series book, Bible Women: All their Words and Why They Matter by the Rev. Lindsay Hardin Freeman.

On Sunday, November 1, at 10:30 a.m. in the Lowry Room, there will be an organizational meeting:
  • To choose the day and time of week to gather to share each week's reading from the book
  • To make plans to attend the Bible Women event featuring the Rev. Lindsay Freeman on November 14 at DaySpring Conference Center. The day is sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of SW Florida.  Carpooling from St. John's will be coordinated.
The Rev. Lindsay Freeman is passionate about sharing great stories of faith from a woman's perspective. She profiles the words of every woman who spoke in the Bible. Bible Women is an opportunity to get reacquainted with not only the stories of the biblical woman, but also to reflect anew on their words and actions as they relate to our lives. She is an award-winning author and has been a priest for 30 years.

On Saturday, November 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at DaySpring Conference Center in Ellenton, the Rev. Freeman will speak at the ECW annual meeting. The Bible Women game, based on the TV game show "Jeopardy," will be featured during the afternoon.  Cost for the day is $25. Music for the day will be provided by Fran McKendree who weaves melodies and lyrics that gather community and invites the Holy Spirit into the soul through laughter, gentle rhythms and foot-stomping beats.  Fran is well loved in the diocese and across the country for his music that is deeply rooted in both Christian tradition and theology and speaks of a God who knows us and loves us in the diversity of our human spirit.

Beginning the week of Sunday, November 29, the Women's Advent Series will meet weekly on the dates and time determined at the organizational meeting on November 1 at 4:00 p.m.  The price of the book is $22.  Mother Alice Sadler will facilitate the discussions.

Beginning in January, the study of women profiled in Bible Women will continue weekly.

Action Items and Opportunities
"Stitch 3 - Pray 3"
Calling all knitters, crocheters, and dressmakers! Join us on November 8, in the Lowry Room at 4:00 p.m. (Men and women are invited)

As part of the Pastoral Care and Outreach Commission, we are starting "Stitch 3 - Pray 3" for the purpose of knitting or crocheting prayer shawls, lap blankets, caps and scarves for those in the hospital, newborns, military members and any other groups that may have a need.  The stitching may be done as a group and individually. They prayers over the article are for the person who will receive the gift.  The stitching is done in motions of three for God, The Father; God, The Son; and God, the Holy Spirit.  You may choose different three word phrases (God is love, Walk in Light) that can be said as one knits or crochets.  Make up others as you go.

For those who have a gift of sewing, simple dresses may be sewn for AIDS Orphans in Tanzania or other non-profit organizations with a need for simple dresses.

The items will be blessed at the St. John's altar or chapel before being given away.

An organizational meeting will be held on November 8 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Lowry Room.  At the meeting, we will select a time to plan our first activities.

The St. John's Giving Tree
The Projects and Outreach Commission has developed a new way for us to give back to our community this Christmas season. In the courtyard, after all three services starting Sunday, November 15, for three consecutive Sundays, you will find a tree decorated with ornaments representing a suggested gift for one of three local organizations: Cornerstone Kids, Meals on Wheels, and Metropolitan Ministries. This effort will allow parishioners a range of giving options that align with their budget and/or causes closest to their heart. Gifts should be returned to the church by Sunday, December 6. Let's make this inaugural year of the St. John's Giving Tree a huge success!
