Sunday's Scripture Snippet

Who will contend with me?
Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries?
Let them confront me.
It is the Lord GOD who helps me;
who will declare me guilty?

You will notice a large void on the south chancel wall has appeared, a space usually occupied by the pipes of the Great and some of the Pedal divisions of the organ. This has become necessary in order to address the ongoing moisture issues we have been facing with the chancel wall. Apart from a very narrow walk board for maintenance and tuning of the instrument, access is far too limited for the kind of restorative work that needs to be done, and so, earlier this week, Ron Streicher, our organ technician, and I carefully removed all but the lowest Pedal pipes, which are very heavy, and stored them in pipe chests within the church until they are ready to be replaced. The organ will be out of service until this process is completed, given the need to cover the console and remaining pipework in protective plastic in order to minimize the possibility of the ingestion of even the tiniest piece of debris, which could cause major problems to pipework or electronics.

We will be using the piano for our services in the meantime. Unlike the organ, the piano is a percussive and not a sustaining instrument, and, as such, does not support congregational singing as well. Nonetheless, we will do what we can with four hands during the hymns! The choir will sing from the north transept, which will bring them much more into the body of the church. Please bear with us during this time.

St. John's Fathers Ministry Meeting
A few parish dads met with Fr. Connelly recently to discuss how to take proactive steps in revitalizing the Fathers Ministry at the Church and encourage new fathers to participate. They started with re-defining our mission (below). Fathers are invited to their first official meeting on September 21st at 6:00 p.m. at Mad Dogs and Englishmen on MacDill Avenue.

St. John's Church Fathers Ministry Mission Statement
The St. John's Church Fathers Ministry seeks to strengthen the unique bond between fathers and their children, while developing camaraderie between fathers within the church community. The ministry pursues its mission by hosting two primary annual activities: a spring retreat which is open to all family members and the Fathers Camping Trip, enjoyed by fathers and their children in the fall. Other actives include providing cooking services at two annual cookouts and the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. The Fathers Ministry also hosts occasional social gatherings and welcomes opportunities to collaborate with other family-oriented church ministries.
