Youth In-Town Mission Week Info

Next week, our in-town mission week will focus on serving and learning about the homeless community and those living in poverty. The whole week will be spent at Metropolitan Ministries where youth will help prepare meals, volunteer in the thrift shop, and learn about the causes of poverty and homelessness. The timeframe is 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 27 through 31. The cost is $50 per person for the whole week (includes lunch each day, t-shirt, and program fee). You may drop off your monetary donation at the parish offices no later than August 16. Please make your check payable to St. John's. Contact MC Jenkins with questions at Bucsjenkins@aol.com. Thanks!

Youth Mission Trippers Return with Great Memories of Service, Faith, and Fun

Our missioners have returned from El Ayudante! The St John's youth and adults who went were Leland Baldwin, Pat Courtney, Meg Courtney, Marianne Lennartz, Dawn Merritt, Fletcher Barnes, Baldwin Barnes, Caroline Brown, Bella Kirkpatrick, Elle Lehman, Chad Merritt, Michael Lennartz, Jake Connery, Parker Webb, Carter Lindquist, and Stuart Lindquist.

The group worked well together and were very productive. They went to a small village close by for church the Sunday they arrived, but before church, they played sandlot baseball with a group of children of all ages, many of whom had no shoes. Later that evening at devotional time, one of our missioners commented that "it was the best Sunday morning I have ever had in my life." The rest of the group agreed!

A typical day consisted of the team working on construction in the morning, and in the afternoon running VBS for the children who came to El Ayudante for school and for after care. The team felt that God's grace and love surrounded them the entire trip. Relationships were strengthened and new ones were made, a perfect example of how we really are all brothers and sisters in Christ.

The group will be putting together a slide show to thank our wonderful Parish Family for praying for them and supporting all their efforts.

Wednesday Nights at St. John's Starts New Series
The Jesus the New Way series presented by N.T. Wright, begins Wednesday, July 29. Join the Wednesday Nights group in the Parish Hall each Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck supper, fellowship, and Christian enrichment.

Jesus the New Way is a magnificent account of the life and message of Jesus of Nazareth. N.T. Wright is truly one of the most outstanding contemporary Jesus scholars, which is evident throughout this entire production.

Program 1,  July 29 - Getting the Kingdom Started: Into what kind of world was Jesus born? What do we learn from the Dead Sea Scrolls, John the Baptist, and the kingdom announcement of Jesus?

Program 2,  August 5 -Startling Surprises: How did the kingdom announced by Jesus parallel the expectations of the Jewish people that they derived from their study of Scripture? Why was Jesus' news shocking and offensive? What was he really saying?

Program 3,  August 12 - Longing for a King: In a Jewish world weird for the welcome and recognition of a Messiah, how did Jesus redefine what that should mean? What were the implications for the main symbols of Israel's life such as the Holy Temple?

Program 4,  August 19 - Why Did Jesus Die? What were the charges? What was the real and great battle being fought? How was history racing toward its climatic moment, and how did Jesus understand and undertake his role therein?

Program 5,  August 26 - Who Was Jesus? How do we begin to understand the meaning of Jesus by reexamining what we really mean by God? How did Jesus understand himself? How did the early church view Jesus? Was Jesus divine?

Program 6,  September  2 - The New Claim: Was Jesus really raised from the dead? What about all the skeptics' explanations as to why that is impossible? What did resurrection mean to first-century Jews? How does the resurrection of Jesus address our individual lives?

Contemporary Women's Bible Study (Peterson Room)

CWBS continues a study of selected passages from 1 & 2 Samuel.  This course will run through August 25.  The course is designed in such a way that if people cannot attend all the sessions, they will still find each session interesting and not dependent upon what came the week before.

The group meets on Tuesdays from 6:45 to 8:00 a.m. in the Peterson Room at the Middle Division campus. After conversation and a light breakfast (fruit & some type of bread) that members take turns bringing, the study starts at 7:00 a.m. and ends shortly before 8:00 a.m.; a few people may leave early if they have to go to work. All women of St John's and their friends are welcome; the group includes several valued members from other branches of Christ's church.  We would love to have you join us.
