Sunday's Scripture Snippet

But David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This very day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down.

Office Hour Changes

Prayer Vigil for General Convention
As you know, our own Bishop Dabney Smith is one of the four nominees that have been presented by the Joint Nominating Committee to become Presiding Bishop of the United States. The members of the Standing Committee of the Diocese are working hard to offer support and encouragement to Bishop Smith as he goes through this process. The most significant support we can all offer is, of course, prayer. The Standing Committee will be issuing an email message next week that will call our Diocesan community to prayer before and during the General Convention. This email message will contain specific prayers that can be used by individuals and congregations.

To further support this effort, St. John's will host a prayer vigil on Saturday, June 27. The Election of the Presiding Bishop is scheduled to begin at approximately 1:15 p.m., so our vigil will begin at 1:00 p.m. and end by 1:30 p.m. We hope as many parishioners as possible will be able to join us to pray for this important decision being made for all of us and for the future of our Church.

Anglican Musicians Conference

On Wednesday, June 17, 165 members of the Association of Anglican Musicians Annual Conference came to St. John's for a service of Choral Evensong. They were joined by many members of our own congregation, which brought the total number of people in attendance to around 250. The service was sung by the choir of St. John's, conducted by Simon Morley and accompanied by Ben Sheen, Assistant Organist of St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City. Fr. Baker officiated, and the sermon was preached by Fr. Thomas Williams, chaplain to the conference. The music included an anthem commissioned for the occasion and composed by David Briggs to the text 'When in our music God is glorified'. Of the many memorable things about the service, one thing stands out in particular, and that is the congregational singing of the hymns. There are many words that one could use to describe it, but the one I've heard used the most is 'overwhelming'. To hear so many church musicians raise the roof in the hymns was, indeed, uplifting and moving, and many of our own people remarked that they had never heard such congregational singing in St. John's. I am very grateful to our choir, who, once again, sang difficult repertoire to a very high standard in the presence of a musically critical congregation! We are very blessed with our singers, whose dedication and skill are second to none.

Sunday is the last day our choir will sing before taking their well deserved break for the month of July. Please take a moment to thank them, should you see them, for their hard work and commitment throughout the year.

Education for Ministry
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a lay theological program from Sewanee, the University of the South.  Our small group meets weekly from fall through spring with a Sewanee trained mentor. Study, worship, discussion, and theological reflection serve as the basis for the weekly classes.

EfM is not a Bible study group; it is not a seminary or college class- no exams, no papers, no grades. The topics include: Year One - The Old Testament, Year Two - The New Testament, Year Three - Church History, Year Four - Other Religions and Philosophy. Students commit one year at a time.

EfM is a weekly seminar to reflect theologically on Christian life, to gain understanding and appreciation of God in everyday life.

To learn more about EfM, please contact Mother Alice Sadler at 259.1570 or Oliver Roberts at 310.2119.

Contemporary Women's Bible Study (Peterson Room)

Starting on June 30, CWBS will begin a study of selected passages from 1 & 2 Samuel.  This course will run through August 25.  The course is designed in such a way that if people cannot attend all the sessions, they will still find each session interesting and not dependent upon what came the week before.

The group meets on Tuesdays from 6:45 to 8:00 a.m. in the Peterson Room at the Middle Division campus. After conversation and a light breakfast (fruit & some type of bread) that members take turns bringing, the study starts at 7:00 a.m. and ends shortly before 8:00 a.m.; a few people may leave early if they have to go to work. All women of St John's and their friends are welcome; the group includes several valued members from other branches of Christ's church.  We would love to have you join us.

Wednesday Nights at St. John's (Parish Hall)

Beginning Wednesday, July 1, the group will study Psalms. For millennia, believers have turned to the Psalms to express praise, sorrow, gratitude, and hope. But readers have questioned: who wrote these poems and hymns and why? And how can reading and studying the Psalms help me express my own feelings to God?

This four session DVD series helps answer these questions and many more. The four sessions are (1) Psalms of Praise, (2) Psalms of Lament, (3) Psalms of Thanksgiving, and (4) Royal Psalms. Each session will guide the group through the Scriptures, cultivating a dynamic group discussion and helping them grow in a deeper relationship with God and others.

The Wednesday Nights at St. John's group invites all parishioners and friends to join them each week in the Parish Hall. Bring  a dish to share and an open heart and mind for discussion. Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for more details.
