Sunday's Scripture Snippet

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

Music News: Anglican Music Conference Includes Evensong, All Invited

The Association of Anglican Musicians, an organization of musicians and clergy serving in the worshiping communities of the Episcopal Church and the larger Anglican tradition, will hold their Annual Conference in Tampa from June 15th through 19th. Founded in the early 1970s as the successor to the American Cathedral Organists and Choirmasters Association, AAM's membership today embraces musicians, clergy, and supporters of music in Anglican liturgical life.

Members work and worship in cathedrals, parishes and missions large and small, theological seminaries, and church-related schools. They are organists, pianists, bishops, guitarists, presbyters and deacons, directors and trainers of choirs, teachers of music, and friends of Anglicanism's musical tradition and practice of sung prayer.

As part of the conference program, AAM members will attend a service of Choral Evensong at St. John's on Wednesday, June 17th at 5:30 p.m. This service will be sung by the Choir of St. John's, conducted by Simon Morley and accompanied by Benjamin Sheen, Assistant Organist of St. Thomas, Fifth Avenue, New York City. The service will feature the premiere of an anthem commissioned by St. John's for the occasion and composed by David Briggs to the text 'When in our music God is glorified.' Members of our own congregation are warmly invited to attend.

Soiree Summer Get Together

The Soire at the Woodroffe home was a terrific time to meet and greet people from other service times at St. John's! The flowers by Emily Levy and the amazing appetizers (Ansley's gorgeous cheese and dip!) coupled by the Woodroffe's warm hospitality all contributed to a lovely evening.

Our lovely hostess Carol Woodroffe, and guest Miriam Faircloth

Wednesday Nights at St. John's (Parish Hall)

The last book of the Bible is one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism, which at best appears unusual to the modern reader. Symbolic language, however, is one of the chief characteristics of apocalyptic literature, of which this book is an outstanding example. Such literature enjoyed wide popularity in both Jewish and Christian circles from ca. 200 B.C. to A.D. 200. "This book contains an account of visions in symbolic and allegorical language borrowed extensively from the Old Testament, especially Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Daniel. Whether or not these visions were real experiences of the author or simply literary conventions employed by him is an open question." - US Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Wednesday Nights group will continue to study Revelation by viewing an eight session DVD study, Revelation According to John. The Wednesday Nights at St. John's group invites all parishioners and friends to join them each week in the Parish Hall. Bring  a dish to share and an open heart and mind for discussion. Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for more details.
