Sunday's Scripture Snippet

This Jesus is

`the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.'

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.

Parish News
"Heavenly" Parish Retreat Enjoyed by All
The Parish Retreat on Saturday, April 25 was an absolutely heavenly day! The parishioners who attended took part in many activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, ropes course, hermit crab walk, prayer workshops, canopy walk, labyrinth walk, and worship . Sharon Stoll blessed the group with harp music while they walked the labyrinth and children frolicked. Many wonderful conversations took place, new friendships took hold, and precious time was spent among family members. All in all a spectacular success ... Thanks to all who attended and an extra thanks to the steering committee who helped create, support, and give meaning and focus to the retreat, especially committee members Doug and Suzanne Arthur!
Youth Mission Trip Deadline is Tomorrow

Are you and your family interested in serving God and your neighbor in Nicaragua this summer?  St. John's Youth (6th to 12th grades) are going on a week long mission trip to El Ayudante in Nicaragua July 11 through 18.  Join other youth and families while we work on construction, clean water, VBS, and other projects for the poor and orphaned communities in Nicaragua. We will also enjoy a day of sightseeing and fun! The deadline to register is April 30. Contact Chaplain HQ with questions or to let her know you are going on the trip.

The Men's Ministry: Tuesday, May 5

The next Men's Ministry event will be entitled Writing about (Your) Inspiring Lives. St. John's parishioner Phil Leigh will share lessons learned as a biography ghostwriter and explain how you can write your own. As Tennessee Williams put it, "Life is all memories except for the one present moment that goes by so quickly you hardly catch it going."

After finishing an investment career, Phil's first Civil War book was distributed by the University of Chicago Press in 2013 and followed by two more in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, Phil has written twenty-three Civil War articles for the New York Times. In 2013 he began ghostwriting the biographies of living Floridians in order to learn more about the challenges and accomplishments of others.

Please join us in the Parish Hall at 6:00 p.m. for wine and fellowship time, a fine meal catered by Holy Hog Barbecue at 6:30 p.m., and our speaker following dinner. RSVP to Dallas Coffield at dcoffield@gmail.com.

Sandwich Sunday Hosts Needed

Each month, we make sandwiches and bag lunches for the needy patrons of Faith Café to take with them after they eat a hot meal at the Café. We are in need of monthly hosts for July 19, August 16, and December 20. Hosting means purchasing supplies (costs are reimbursed by St. John's), helping facilitate the assembly line, and delivering sandwiches to Faith Café. There is a family that would like to co-host on one of these dates, but is unable to deliver the sandwiches to the Café on Monday. If you are interesting in being their co-host, or in hosting yourselves on one of these dates, please contact Amanda Sansone at amanda.arnold.sansone@gmail.com.

Wednesday Nights in St. John's (Parish Hall)

The last book of the Bible is one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism, which at best appears unusual to the modern reader. Symbolic language, however, is one of the chief characteristics of apocalyptic literature, of which this book is an outstanding example. Such literature enjoyed wide popularity in both Jewish and Christian circles from ca. 200 B.C. to A.D. 200. "This book contains an account of visions in symbolic and allegorical language borrowed extensively from the Old Testament, especially Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Daniel. Whether or not these visions were real experiences of the author or simply literary conventions employed by him is an open question." - US Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Wednesday Nights group will continue to study Revelation by viewing an eight session DVD study, Revelation According to John. The Wednesday Nights at St. John's group invites all parishioners and friends to join them each week in the Parish Hall. Bring a dish to share and an open heart and mind for discussion. Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for more details.
