News
Service Time Changes Begin September 7

As our Rector, Fr. Connelly, announced last Sunday, in response to multiple requests, we will be adjusting our service times slightly. The 7:45 a.m. service will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the 9:00 will be at 9:15 a.m. The 11:15 a.m. service remains at the same time.

Please note that these changes go into effect on Sunday, September 7, and that until then, the times remain 7:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

A Celebration of New Ministry

Saint John's is entering a new phase in our life together as a parish. Some might say that it is a "resurrection" of sorts.  On Sunday, August 24th, at 5:00 p.m. in the church, it will be the pleasure of your Wardens to address Bishop Smith publicly and request his Celebration of a New Ministry by inducting Fr. Connelly as Rector of this parish church.  All of us in attendance will be asked to support and uphold Fr. Connelly in his new ministry, just as we agree to support the newly baptized during that rite.

This service will officially mark a new life for this church; fortunately, one that has already begun with our call to Father Connelly.   I urge each of you to join us on the 24th for this very meaningful service.   With God's grace, it doesn't happen often, but it is monumental when it does.

The Baker Family Gives Thanks

Dear St. John's Family:

You have received us so warmly and made us feel so welcome.  The events of moving and beginning a new vocation can be very stressful but you have helped to make it most pleasant.  We are very grateful and are looking forward to participating in and contributing to the life of our community.

Music News from our Organist and Choirmaster
Our choir will be in New York City this weekend. They will be singing on Saturday for the wedding of former St. John's chorister, Matt Henry, to Meagan Bromley at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue. They will also be singing the following morning at the Festal Eucharist for the feast of St. Mary the Virgin. This service is webcast live at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, and can be accessed then or later by visiting www.saintthomaschurch.org.

We are delighted to welcome Ellie Taylor back to the organ bench on Sunday, August 17th. Ellie was Organist and Choirmaster at St. John's for over twenty years before her retirement in 2006, and we are most grateful to her for playing for our services whilst our choir and organists are away.

In-Town Mission Trip Week: August 4 through 8

Fr. Connelly and Chaplain Harrison-Quillin took the youth of the parish to do mission work at our local non-profits last week.  On Monday the group went to Feeding America Tampa Bay, and Tuesday was Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful day at the Florida State Fairgrounds' Learning Garden. The group visited Grand Court, an assisted living facility, and Metropolitan Ministries, before they enjoyed a Friday Funday as a wrap-up to the week!

Upcoming Events
Calling all Parents of Children from 3 Years Old to Rising 5th Grade...

Please join us following the 9:00 a.m. service on August 24 for Children's Ministry Rally Day! You will be able to register your child for Sunday School, learn about upcoming fun family events, see highlights of the curriculum your child will be taught, and learn what the rest of 2014 holds for children's Christian education at St. John's...

Once you have registered, you and your child will receive name tags and an information sheet. You will then be able to visit the Sunday School classrooms and meet your teachers for the fall.

For each class visited, your child will receive a sticker. Once your child has visited all four classrooms and has received all four stickers, he or she then can go jump in the bounce house.

There will be popcorn and a mystery snack... We can't wait to share our plans for this year!

Baseball with the Bishop:
Deadline to Buy Tickets Is Monday

Once again, Bishop Smith is hosting a fun night at The Trop, and this time you get to see a bonus Rays win against the reigning World Champion (and dreaded)

Boston Red Sox on the evening of Friday, August 29.

To reserve your seats, please mail or deliver a check made out to St. John's Church for $20 per person (tickets are a $35 value, and a portion of proceeds go to the Episcopal Charities Fund) to Rebecca McKenzie in the parish offices by next Monday, August 18. Please let us know the names of those who will attend in your party. Tickets can be picked up before/after Sunday services on August 24, or during parish office hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) the week of August 25. (Fr. Chip Connelly sends his regrets, but he will be on an annual family weekend trip and can't attend this year.)

The first pitch is at 7:10 p.m., but you'll want to get there by 6:30 to see Bishop Smith throw out the first ball. Gates open at 5:10 p.m. If you have extra seats in your car, please plan on meeting at the church at 5:30 p.m. to depart by 5:45 p.m.; if you need a ride, or just want to carpool, please  contact Rebecca in the parish offices. If you would like to attend but the ticket price would present a hardship, please contact Fr. Connelly confidentially and we will make arrangements for you to get a ticket. If you would like to help provide a ticket for a fellow parishioner, please include that amount in your check and let us know that that's what the additional funds are for.

Your Action Needed
Lost and Found Items are Looking for YOU!

This Sunday, August 17, and next Sunday, August 24, we will make the collection of lost and found items we have accumulated over the past year or more available in the hallway outside the parish offices for all to peruse. Please come claim yours! If we do not find owners for the items, which range from sippy cups to sweaters to pillowcases, we will find them a new home after the 24th.

Help Needed for Youth Raffle

We are looking for eight youth-focused raffle prizes for the students at our upcoming Middle & High School Youth Pep Rally on September 7.  These could range from tickets to theme parks, gift certificates, movie passes, music lessons, and more.  We want to make the rally an exciting and fun-filled event for our youth and believe that prizes could be a good draw and add to the revelry.  If you would like to donate a prize, please contact Vera Farmen at verafarmen@earthlink.net.

Authentic: The Developing Disciplines of a Sincere Faith

A 7-week DVD series and small group study

Has hypocrisy crept into your life? It doesn't just happen overnight. Drifting into hypocrisy is a long, drawn-out journey away from God's best for your life and toward a two-faced existence. Follow along with Pastor James MacDonald on the road toward truth and explore the disciplines of personal Bible study, personal prayer, fasting, fellowship, and service for Christ. Become the real deal. Be authentic.

For a review of this series on YouTube go to this web address: Authentic - Develop the Disciplines of a Sincere Faith - YouTube

This group meets each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Bring a Bible, a covered dish to share, and an open heart and mind. Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for details.

Men's Thursday Interactive Bible Study and Lunch (Peterson Room)

"I discovered later, and I'm still discovering right up to this moment, that is it only by living completely in this world that one learns to have faith. By this-worldliness I mean living unreservedly in life's duties, problems, successes and failures. In so doing we throw ourselves completely into the arms of God, taking seriously, not our own sufferings, but those of God in the world. That, I think, is faith."  -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Men's Interactive Bible Study and Lunch group will begin their fall series on Thursday, August 28, at 11:45 a.m. in the Peterson Room with a study of John 17: 1-19: "We are called to live in the world."

Lunch is sandwiches at $5 per person. RSVP to dlrncrtpa@verizon.net if you would like to partake.

Tuesday, September 2
10:30 a.m.
Women's Mid Morning Bible Study (Lowry Room)
Women of St. John's, friends and neighbors are invited to participate in a fall study entitled "Psalms: Songs for the Soul," based on a curriculum developed by the Rev. Gwynne Johnson (Lutheran). The psalms are a rich resource that can guide our prayers, our thinking and our life choices. They have something to teach us about each of life's seasons: times of comfort, times of difficulty and times of resolution. Each lesson will focus on a theme and psalms that speak to it.

Miranda Harrison-Quillin, Associate Chaplain, will introduce this study, which will begin September 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Lowry Room, and continue on alternate Tuesdays through December 9. For more information contact either Joan McKay at MCKAYJHM@aol.com or Pat Wilson at 644.4640 or patwilson68@tampabay.rr.com.
