Sunday's Scripture Snippet

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.

1 Corinthians 12

News
Clergy News

Father Doug Zimmerman has accepted a call as Team Rector of St. Mary the Virgin in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. I think many of you know that Tamara is from England, so this new position will allow her to be much closer to her family. In fact, Doug and Tamara learned of this opportunity during a recent family gathering there. Father Zimmerman will continue his work with us until sometime in August and will be at services this coming Sunday to say more about his new call.

We also wish the best to Deacon Alisa Carmichael, who departs St. John's School this summer.  Deacon Carmichael was hired in January for the remainder of the 2013-2014 to help handle the chaplaincy duties for the Lower and Middle Divisions of the school, and now returns to a busy life as Deacon Chaplain of the USF Episcopal Chapel Center, musician and more.

Both Fr. Z and Deacon Carmichael will be missed. I know you join me in wishing them the very best, and I ask that you keep them and their families in your prayers.

Update on Children and Youth Ministries Renovation

The Youth and Children Renovation Teams have been hard at work over the past several months.  With the help of Ministry Architects, the groups created a mission statement, a statement of our core values when it comes to children and youth, and three-year revolving goals. The core values of the group are to be Christ-Centered, Kind/Compassionate, Committed, and Open-Minded.

The three-year goals include activities and events to grow the numbers and satisfaction of our youth and children and their families, as well as of the volunteers involved in these ministries. But even beyond that, the plan also contains specific goals and measurable outcomes.  A few examples include:

  • Creating a yearly family retreat that will be attended by 40 families and 80 children
  • Creating age-appropriate Sunday School classes for children, with weekly attendance of 90 children and 18 adult volunteers
  • Achieving weekly Middle School youth group attendance of 40 Middle School youth on average, and 12 adult volunteers.

All goals include a three-year goal, as well as a one-year benchmark, and clearly delineated next steps to be undertaken immediately.

The Soiree

The food was amazingly tasty and varied at the last Soire before the summer hiatus. Meats, sandwiches, canapes, empanadas, taquitos, cheese trays, breads, homemade guacamole, quiche, and so much more; delicious! The crowd was huge with over 70 in attendance at the lovely home of Ron and Mary Hulse in Culbreath Isles.

Conversations were lively and fun, with attendees from all three Sunday services meeting and greeting old and new friends!

The group will continue viewing and discussing GodQuest, a 6-week DVD series and small group study which brings the truth of Christianity to life in a personal and relevant way to those who have doubts about its validity. Sean McDowell presents historical, scientific, and archaeological evidence for the existence of God, the truth of the Bible, and the deity of Christ. Also features Lee Strobel and Josh McDowell.

This series answers this most critical challenge facing the Church today. It will help to develop a strong foundation for faith and is an excellent resource for outreach to seekers, offering powerful truths and compelling evidences for faith in Christ. It is a life-altering spiritual journey every person should take!

This group meets each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Bring a Bible, a covered dish to share, and an open heart and mind. Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for details.
