News
Pentecost Sunday

This Sunday, June 8, we will celebrate Pentecost Sunday at all three services.  The 11:15 a.m. service will be a Festal Eucharist, with special music by the Florida Orchestra's brass quintet. The brass quintet will also play at the 9:00 a.m. service.

Please note that incense will be used at the 11:15 a.m. service on this day.

Among Christians, Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the twelve apostles and other followers of Jesus, as described in Acts 2:1-31.  For this reason, Pentecost is sometimes described as the "Birthday of the Church."  Pentecost is the fiftieth day after Easter Day, and is ten days after the ascension of Christ.

The clergy's vestments on Pentecost are red, reminding us of the form the Holy Spirit took as it descended on the disciples.

"And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire,

and it sat upon each of them."  - Acts 2:3

Parishioners may also wish to dress in red to honor this pivotal moment in Christian history.

Please join us for this important feast in the life of the church!

A Note from Your Vestry

Dear Fellow St. John's Parishioners,

The members of the Vestry want to update you on our progress as of the end of May.  A good portion of the Vestry attended the Diocesan-wide Annual Vestry Retreat and training Saturday, May 10th, at DaySpring. We heard great presentations by Bishop Smith, Canon Michael Durning, Ann Vickers (the Diocesan CFO), and Martha Goodwill (our Diocesan Administrator).  These presentations focused on the role of the Vestry in a normal course of operations of a parish, as well as statistical data showing how St. John's compares to other parishes in the diocese. The retreat was very helpful to us in our goal of normalizing our Vestry functions and duties as it gave all of us a great deal of useful information.

On this past Saturday, the Vestry held a second retreat with Canon Durning and Fr. Connelly.  Canon Durning helped us in expressing, in this stage of our history, where the Vestry feels we are as a parish and where we are headed.

Following the retreat the Vestry met with Canon Durning for the planning of our next steps.  In keeping with the wishes of the Bishop, the Vestry will be working on a process of discernment for the parish over the next 30 to 60 days.

The goal of this process is to gather input from all of the parish members on several important questions.  Some of these questions include

  • As a community of Christians - who are we now and who do we want to become?
  • Where is God calling St. John's now?  Is there a new vision for St. John's?
  • What leadership qualities will take St. John's on the road toward our vision for the future?
  • Prayerfully - what do we see as God's will for St. John's?

As a part of that discernment process, the Vestry will host small group meetings that will be open to all members of the parish after each of the Sunday services during the month of June. We don't know the specific locations yet, but the schedule will be

  • June 8 - After the 7:45 a.m. service and after the 9:00 a.m. service
  • June 15 -- After the 7:45 a.m. service and after the 11:15 a.m. service
  • June 22 -- After the 9:00 a.m. service and after the 11:15 a.m. service

This schedule allows for summer travel and should give everyone an opportunity to participate.  If you are out of town and unable to attend any of these gatherings, please feel free to put a letter in either of the Wardens' mailboxes in the hall near the parish offices, mail a letter to one of the Wardens, or email the wardens at srwarden@stjohnstampa.org or jrwarden@stjohnstampa.org.

We want to hear from you! Please join us at one of the six opportunities in June to listen to your fellow parishioners and to offer your prayerful response to these questions.

Your St John's Vestry

Alpha House Ingathering Results

It was a very special Mother's Day for the mothers and babies at Alpha House thanks to the parishioners of St. John's Episcopal!  Our Mother's Day ingathering was, once again, an amazing success.  Almost 3,000 diapers, 4,000 wipes, 200 household goods, 100 food items, 400 health and toiletry items, and over 200 articles of clothing for mothers and babies were delivered in May.  Additionally, $565.00 in gift cards, checks and cash were donated.

As the ingathering items were delivered, a new mother walked up holding her young child in an infant carrier.  She insisted on helping unload the mass of donations with her one free hand.  In the end, she was convinced to hold the door while others did the heavier work, but her appreciation was as clear as her willingness to help.  It is good to know that mothers like her will benefit from our efforts!

Cornerstone Kids End of the School Year Party

Much fun was had on May 29 when parents and friends gathered to celebrate the children who attend the Cornerstone Kids after school enrichment program. Instructors began the afternoon by awarding many certificates to the kids for their academic and behavioral improvements throughout the school year. Then, everyone enjoyed a harp and bell "concert" which highlighted the work our own Sharon Stoll has beendoing with the students. And finally, everyone in attendance was encouraged, including Fr. Connelly, to get up and dance with the kids to the very popular song, "Happy."

Congratulations, LEVs!

Ray and Sharon Stoll were licensed as Lay Eucharistic Visitors by the Bishop this past weekend. Winkie Game was also licensed recently. Thank you to all our Lay Eucharist Visitors for your dedication and ministry!

St. John's Welcomes New Chaplain

We are pleased to welcome our new Curate and Associate Chaplain to the School, Robert O. Baker, to the St. John's clergy. Robert was awarded a Certificate in Anglican Studies by Nashotah House on May 22, and will be ordained to the Diaconate in Christ Church, Bradenton, on Sunday, June 29, at 4:00 p.m.

Robert has a PhD from Baylor University, a Master's in Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, a Master's in Divinity from the Church of God Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lee University.  He and his wife Evelyn have four children: Jeremiah (5), Henry (4), Helen (19 months), and Richard (5 months).

Events
Blessing of Missioners

Missioners to the Dominican Republic from St. John's will be blessed by Fr. Chip Connelly this Pentecost Sunday, June 8, at the 9:00 a.m. service. They are: Team 1: (June 7-14) Henry Woodroffe; Team 2: (June 14-21) Sally Thompson, Carol Ihrig, Bradley French, Michael Lennartz, Jake Connery, Will Connery, Baldwin Barnes, Meg Courtney, Gwen Connery, Leland Baldwin, Miranda Harrison-Quillin.

The Diocese of the Dominican Republic (DR), with the help of the Tampa Deanery, is building a two-story church to replace the former unsafe and deteriorating facility. The three teams from Tampa will build pews and altar furnishings, prep and begin painting, paint interior and exterior of the building, seal the roof, and do community projects if time permits.

Dudley Clendinen: A Good Short Life
Non-Fiction Feature Plays at Tampa Theatre

In A Good Short Life, Tampa filmmaker Stewart Lippe reveals Dudley Clendinen's inspirational efforts to finish his last book as he struggles to "live with Lou." Clendenin, a journalist, author, and art collector, was a Tampa native whose last book, A Place Called Canterbury: Tales of the New Old Age in America (2008), detailed life in the Tampa retirement-nursing home, Canterbury Towers, where his widowed mother spent her last years and where Mr. Clendinen lived for 400 days.

"I was intrigued by the challenge of making a film about someone who, at the point that I started the project, was unable to be understood due to ALS," Lippe says. "[Clendinen] had done some interviews for WYPR in Baltimore at the onset of the disease the previous year, and they generously gave me permission to use them. These interviews were his 'voice,' and I built his life, times and history around the interviews. What started as a simple documentary quickly became a complex, in-depth look at an individual whose personal life was a fascinating reflection of a civil rights movement. And as that life was being terminated by ALS, he was working desperately to finish the book that chronicled his experiences of dying."

The movie plays this Saturday, June 7, at 12:30 p.m. at Tampa Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. Click here for more information.

Action Items and Opportunities
St. John's Entrepreneurs Group
Begins Training Course

The St. John's Entrepreneurs Group will be entering into a training course on the Business Model Canvas over the months of June and July.  Walt Hardenstine, the leader of the Entrepreneurs Group, would like to offer the opportunity to participate to any parishioner who owns a business and would like to join the group for the four sessions.  The group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month starting June 10, and sessions run 1 1/2 hours each from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

This is the same course of study that Renaissance Executive Forum members (owners of companies up to $.5 billion in revenues) will be receiving and has been shown to be an exceptionally valuable tool for business owners to learn and understand.  Please direct inquiries and requests to join the group to Walt at 264.6361 or whardenstine@executiveforums.comAgain, this is for current business owners, not just interested parties, as space is limited.

Safeguarding God's Children: Sunday, August 17

Safeguarding God's Children provides participants with the information they need to protect the children they know and care for in their personal lives and the ministries in which they serve. The program is based on the philosophy that if every adult can protect just one child, the will forever change one life. If we can all change one life, together we will make a difference in this generation of children.

The next session of Safeguarding will take place on Sunday, August 17, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

Who needs to attend?

  •  All paid parish staff members, and staff and faculty of the School.
  •  Any volunteers working with children and youth (including Christian education leaders, chaperones and other School volunteers)
  •  Anyone who wishes to learn more about how the parish and School can protect children and youth.

Recertification may be completed online. Email the parish offices at parish@stjohnstampa.org about this option.

Sean McDowell presents historical, scientific, and archaeological evidence for the existence of God, the truth of the Bible, and the deity of Christ. Also features Lee Strobel and Josh McDowell.

This series answers this most critical challenge facing the Church today. It will help to develop a strong foundation for faith and is an excellent resource for outreach to seekers, offering powerful truths and compelling evidences for faith in Christ. It is a life-altering spiritual journey every person should take!

This group meets each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Bring a Bible, a covered dish to share, and an open heart and mind. Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for details.
