Sunday's Scripture Snippet

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."

2 Peter 1

News

The remaining services for today, Ash Wednesday, are as follows:

5:30 p.m. in the Church

7:00 p.m. Choral Eucharist in the Church

Childcare is available in the nursery during both services.

Don't forget to "Spring Forward" this Saturday night!  Turn your clocks ahead an hour before you go to sleep so you can join us on time for services on Sunday morning.

Interfaith Tea at Rodeph Sholom

The Sisterhood of Rodeph Sholom is hosting its annual Ann Zack Interfaith Tea Program and Reception at the synagogue, 2713 Bayshore Blvd., on Wednesday, March 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  This year will mark the 54th anniversary of this venerable community event. This year's program will be a presentation and panel discussion on "Prayer in the Public Square." Since this is an interfaith program, the panel will reflect some of the religious make-up of the Tampa Bay community. Admission is free, register at www.rsholom.org.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is Tasty Fun!

The annual Shrove (or Fat) Tuesday Pancake Supper was a great time for all!  The FATHERS flipped cakes, resident chef Dave Kenyon prepared the tasty red beans and rice, and the king cake yielded a lot of lucky babies!  Thanks to those who helped and to those who attended.

Annual Commissions Appointed

Commissions and committees for the various concerns of the parish have been appointed.  Please click here to see the names of those who have been asked to serve.  Thank you to those who were willing to participate and advance the work of our church family!

Events
Wednesday Lenten Series: Conversations that Matter Begin March 12

"When an enormous spiritual hunger grows among people, churches may not always be the best places to offer "solid food." Meals with friends who have developed the art of spiritual communication might be much better places." Henri Nouwen

Donna Meagher Gem and Alex Gem will be hosting a "Happy Hour" each week during Lent! Join us at 5:45 p.m. each Wednesday evening for a fun little prelude to the Lenten program.  Enjoy some wine, cheese, and other yummy appetizers (non-alcoholic beverages will also be served), while we play the "Who Am I?" game.  You will be surprised and amazed to learn some interesting facts about the staff, clergy, and Vestry of St. John's that you never would have guessed in a million years.  So come early each Wednesday evening and spend some time socializing in the courtyard prior to the Lenten dinners.

You won't have to figure out where to sit during dinner because you will have a table assignment--maybe next to someone you may not know very well (or at all). And you won't have to figure out what to talk about with others at your table because there will be discussion questions related to the evening's topic. Just in case you were thinking of not speaking a word, there will be a facilitator to make sure everyone gets a chance to talk (of course, you could still keep silent if that is your preference).

The first week's topic is You Only Have to Die: Leading Your Congregation to New Life led by The Rev. James Harnish, Senior Pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist. The Rev. Harnish's book of the same name is available in the parish offices for check-out.

All Wednesday events will take place in the Parish Hall from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dinner and childcare will be provided. For more information, click here to download a flyer about the Wednesday events.

We want to be good stewards of our resources, so RSVP to parish@stjohnstampa.org or 259.1570 by the Monday before each event so we can get a good count for dinner and so that we can make sure we have adequate staff for childcare.

Organ Recital at University of Tampa This Friday

Will Feature Our Own Simon Morley

The University of Tampa are presenting weekly organ demonstrations on the new Dobson organ in the Sykes Chapel for Faith and Values. These short recitals are on Fridays at 12:00 noon, and last for around thirty minutes. Our own Organist and Choirmaster, Simon Morley, will play the recital this Friday, March 7th, at 12:00 noon. Admission is free, and the new chapel and organ, if you haven't seen or heard them, are quite stunning. Simon invites you to drop in if you are in the vicinity of UT.

Youth Movie Outing, Thursday, March 13
Youth, join Chaplain Harrison-Quillin for the movie Son of God, a dramatic depiction of the life of our Lord.  From the movie's website: "Now, the larger-than-life story of The New Testament gets a larger-than life treatment in the stand-alone feature Son of God. Told with the scope and scale of an action epic, the film features powerful performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects and a rich orchestral score from Oscar®-winner Hans Zimmer."

The group will go to the movie after school next Thursday, March 13, then will enjoy a post-show dinner.  Pick up and drop off will be at the Westshore Mall. Email Chaplain HQ to RSVP.
Interfaith Seder 5774
Congregation Rodeph Sholom invites us to celebrate the gift of freedom and Passover at the annual Interfaith Seder.  The event will take place on Monday, March 31 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the social hall at Rodeph Sholom, 2713 Bayshore Boulevard.  Feed both your soul and your body: first your soul through the Passover Seder, then your body through the delicious catered dinner.

Dress is business casual. The event is free, but please call 837.1911 or go to  www.rsholom.org to register.  Seating is limited, RSVP by March 15.
