Annual Choir Benefit Concert

St. John's Choir will present their Annual Benefit Concert on Sunday, February 23 at 5:00 p.m. Central to the program will be Benjamin Britten's cantata "Rejoice in the Lamb." Composed by Britten in 1943 and based on the poem Jubilate Agno by Christopher Smart (1722-1771), the text was written while Smart, who was of unbalanced mind, was in an asylum, and depicts idiosyncratic praise and worship of God by all created beings and things, each in its own way. The work is scored for four soloists, choir, and organ. Simon Morley directs the choir, with guest organist Simon Jacobs making a return visit to St. John's to accompany.

The concert is free and open to the public.  A reception in the Parish Hall, to which all are invited, will follow.

Choral Evensong

Join us as the St. John's School Middle Division Choir leads us in traditional choral evening prayer.  A lovely addition to your Lenten devotions, Evensong includes both congregational hymns and choral pieces.

An important service in the Anglican tradition since the sixteenth century, Evensong is sung daily in English Cathedrals and Collegiate Chapels at the close of day. Two lessons from scripture are read, prayers are said and sung, and the choir offers psalms, canticles and an anthem.
