News

The Soiree: January 17 

     

Icon Workshop Offered

Spend the week painting an icon of St. John the Baptist. No painting experience necessary. Fee includes instruction and all materials: board, prototype, paints, brushes, gold leaf and varnish. End the week with a completed icon. Commuter fee is $480 including lunch daily, or spend six nights at Saint Leo Abbey for $660, including 3 meals daily & workshop.

Philip Zimmerman, a well-known iconographer who teaches across the U.S. and in Canada, works in traditional Byzantine style and will teach a week-long class at Saint Leo Abbey February 17th - 22nd, his fourth at the Abbey.   Each participant will write the icon of Saint John the Baptist pictured above.   All materials and equipment needed to complete the icon are provided: gessoed 11x13 inch wooden board, prototype (pattern), paints, brushes, gold leaf and varnish. 

 

The workshop will be held in the Feeney Room adjoining the Abbey Guest House.  There is a small kitchen for snacks, coffee and tea.  Class time is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to suppertime (5:30 for Abbey guests).  Saturday morning will be devoted to varnishing and clean-up,  and a celebratory lunch. Each workshop participant should leave the Abbey with a completed icon.

Action Items and Opportunities

Flowers and Candle Available

On Sundays, February 9 and 16 and March 23, the candle in the sanctuary light is available.  On Sunday, February 9, the flowers at the church altar are available.

Sandwich Sunday Hosts Needed

Hosts are needed for Sandwich Sunday on May 18th, June 15th and July 20th. Sandwich Sunday is our outreach to the needy at Faith Café.  Each month, we make sandwiches and bag lunches for patrons to take with them after they eat a hot meal at the Café. Hosts purchase supplies like snacks, bread, and bottled water (costs fully reimbursed by St. John's), help coordinate assembly on the day of, and deliver the lunches to Faith Cafe.  Want to help?  Contact Amanda Sansone at asansone@carltonfields.com.

Gasparilla Parade Parking Available

Parking places at our Middle Division school campus (240 Plant Avenue) are now available for pre-sale for the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates on Saturday, January 25. All proceeds go to support St. John's mission work. Pre-sale spaces are $20, day-of-parade spaces are $25 (if available). If you have any questions, or wish to reserve a spot, please email lbaldwin@stjohnstampa.org.

Events

Tampa Bay Area Organ Concert

The Tampa Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present its Annual Members' Recital, to which everyone is invited.  This year the free concert is being held on January 26, at 5:00 p.m.  Hosting the event is St. Catherine's Episcopal Church, located at 502 Druid Hills Road (off 56th Street) in Temple Terrace. 

 

Local organists from nine Bay Area churches will perform on the Robert Sipe pipe organ. Our own Organist and Choirmaster, Simon Morley, will open the program.  Mark your calendar to attend this annual event.

Support Cornerstone Kids:  

Attend the Annual Lincoln & Douglass Ball  

The event, which benefits St. John's outreach partner Cornerstone Kids, will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2014, from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom at the Embassy Suites, 3705 Spectrum Boulevard, Tampa, FL 33612.

Dress is formal; there will be a cash bar, a dinner and dancing. A raffle will also benefit Cornerstone Kids. Email o.leggett@cornerstonekidsinc.org for more information or to purchase tickets.

Mission Possible 2014: Sunday, March 2

Calling all 3rd -12th grade actors, sound technicians, lighting people, singers, dancers, musicians... It's time again for Mission Possible!  This amazing church/school collaboration raises money for our mission work in Uganda and the Dominican Republic.

 

Mark your calendars now! The show will be Sunday, March 2, 4:00 p.m. at the Middle Division school gym, 240 Plant Avenue.

 

Come out and join in the amazing array of fun and talent at the annual Mission Possible show.  Rehearsals start next week (during school hours for students at St. John's).

Deepening Life Together- Acts is a cutting-edge DVD-based small group, eight-session series that helps ordinary people's understanding of the Scriptures. Covering the book of Acts, this series features teaching experts and scholars from well-respected institutions--such as Talbot Theological Seminary, Bethel Seminary, and Wheaton College--and church congregations that live out the principles shared in their communities

Women's Mid Morning Bible Study
On Tuesday, February 4, the group will focus on Acts 15:36 - 17:34, "Paul Sets Out Again: Syria to Athens."  The Rev. John Reese, Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, will facilitate the session.
 
The group invites all women in our church community and their friends and neighbors to join them on alternate Tuesdays in the Lowry Room for fellowship, prayer and study from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. as they explore the spread of the Good News and the faith it awakened in the Mediterranean world.
