Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program

On October 16, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) honored long time St. John's parishioner, Jan Platt, by renaming the popular county land acquisition program the Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP). When this recommendation was made and unanimously supported by the commissioners at the BOCC meeting on September 18th recognizing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the program, it was a complete surprise to former Commissioner Platt.

In the mid-1980's Commissioner Platt convened a committee to look into developing a local environmental land acquisition program. A large percentage of Hillsborough County voters supported the first referendum and the program was established in 1987 thanks to Jan's efforts.  There have been two overwhelmingly successful referendums since the first one, and now Hillsborough County (including the City of Tampa) has over 61,000 acres preserved and protected. ELAPP has been a model for other local programs around the state. None of this would have been possible without Jan Platt's original vision.

Banner Created for CWBS by Kate Graves
Proves Inspirational

While not a regular member of the Contemporary Women's Bible Study group, Kate has attended the group's annual Women's Retreat for several years.  It was at a retreat at Dayspring that Kate was inspired to create the banner.  Here is how she described it:

"When we were at Dayspring for retreat earlier this year, I looked at the stained glass window in the outdoor chapel in that splendid natural setting.  Blue skies and many shades of green make a serene backdrop for the brilliant yellows of the glass.  There was the palette for the piece right there.  Then I considered the early morning meeting time of the CWBS group.  Early morning sunshine greets you on some of those days.  Streaks of yellow sun had to be a part of the banner.  Then I thought of the first verse of a familiar hymn (367).  It begins, 'When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries, May Jesus Christ Be Praised!'  If CWBS decides that they need a theme song, they might consider that hymn."

CWBS is most grateful to be blessed with this lovely work of art, created by our dear friend Kate, that has such personal meaning for us all.  The banner (and Kate's written account of how she was inspired to create it) is on permanent display in the Peterson Room at the School's Middle Division campus.

May Jesus Christ Be Praised!

Stewardship Corner

The Pharisee in Luke 18 tells us what he is not. Not a thief - check. Not a rogue - check. Not an adulterer - check. And he is surely not like "this tax collector" praying only footsteps away. The Pharisee is crystal clear about anything and everything that he is not, but does he know who he is? Though tithing and fasting are central to how he views himself, we are left to wonder what motivates these practices. Power? Privilege? Prestige? Piety? While paying attention to the sins of others, are the Pharisee's prayers and his practices really focused on God, the Source of life and giver of all good gifts?

As we near St. John's Pledge Sunday, we will provide you with writings from other Christians weekly as we all ponder the responsibility and blessing of providing financial support to our church.  To download the entire inspirational flyer for this week's stewardship narrative, click here.

Candle Available

On Sunday, November 17, and Sundays, December 8 and 22, the candle in the sanctuary light is available. If you would like to take any of these opportunities to support St. John's and honor a loved one, please call the parish offices at 259.1570.
