We want to provide support in your time of need!
Current health regulations prohibit the members of our clergy from being informed when our parishioners are in the hospital, and unfortunately, one of the gifts of ordination is not mind-reading... However, we want to provide support for you and your loved ones in any time of need or crisis. Please call the parish offices at 259.1570 or email
parish@stjohnstampa.org to let us know when you need us!

Rally Day Round-Up

A reminder that we will wrap up our day of parish activities on Sunday, October 20, with a service of Evensong. Evensong, like all forms of liturgical worship, has elements of drama and ritual that nourish the spiritual life of all of us. At St. John's, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy Evensong with our wonderful choir several times a year. This Evensong will include the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B Minor - T. Tertius Noble, Preces and Responses - Bernard Rose and Evening Hymn - H. Balfour-Gardiner.
Join us at 5:00 p.m. and wind down from a busy, fun Rally Day Roundup with quiet prayer and music!

A Note from Our Seminarian, Chase Ackerman
It is hard to believe all of the wonderful things that have happened since I was last at St. John's in July. I am officially out of the Navy, Jeanne has started taking classes of her own at CUNY, Jonathan celebrated his first birthday, and we are all now settled in our apartment in New York and our new life at the General Theological Seminary. It will certainly be an exciting three years!
This past Thursday, the seminary held its Matriculation ceremony for all of the incoming students, and I was fortunate enough to sign my name in the same book all General students have signed since 1822. It is amazing to believe that wonderful people such as Doug Remer, Chip Connelly, and Stefanie Taylor have all signed that very same book! I can not thank everyone at St. John's enough for your continued prayers and support for my family and me during this exciting and challenging new chapter of our lives. I look forward to coming home to Tampa in the near future and seeing you all again. Please drop me a line at 440 W. 21st Street, Box 187, New York, NY 10011, or cackerman@gts.edu. If you find yourself in NYC, I would love to connect with you!
Yours in Christ,
Chase

Head of School Search Update
The Search Committee would like to invite any interested parishioners to an open meeting of our School community to learn more about the Head of School search process and meet our search consultant, Linda Gibbs. This meeting will be held in the Parish Hall on the Orleans Campus on Monday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m. and will allow time for questions and conversation.
By way of update, the Search Committee recently announced the formation of two advisory committees to assist with the search. The role of the Advisory Committees will be to interview and provide feedback on the finalist candidates for SJE's next Head of School, as well as to serve as ambassadors during the finalists' visits to campus later this fall.
Faculty Advisory Committee
Susan Bates, Middle Division Media Specialist
Sarah Bragdon, Middle Division Science
Joanne Price, Form VI
Cory Schafer, Middle Division Math
Diane Scott, Middle Division Administrative Assistant
Justin Smith, Form V Lidia Toledo, Form I
Lee Valenti, Middle Division English
Kristy Wilander, Form III
Parent and Church Advisory Committee Alston Barrow '89 Allison Burden, 2013-2014 Parents' Club President Elizabeth Frazier '86 Regine Gordon Patrick Hanlon, 2013-2014 Dads' Club President Sharon Lai-Lopez

Clay Thomas '84 Christi Zettel '81
We continue to be in the confidential phase of our search as our consultants at Resource Group 175 screen and conduct initial interviews of applicants. This phase must remain confidential, especially since we have some candidates who have not advised their current schools that they are seeking a new position. Looking ahead, the Search Committee will conduct first round interviews of selected candidates in early November. These will be held off-campus to maintain privacy. We look forward to sharing information on the finalists we will be inviting to campus to meet our School community after those first round interviews.
If you have any questions about the Head of School search process, please contact Betsy Graham at betsygraham@verizon.net or 813.835.1410.

St. John's Book Club: 2013-2014 Schedule
Join the St. John's Book Club for a year of wonderful reading and terrific
fellowship! Click here for the schedule of books and meetings for the entire year. And mark your calendar for the next meeting, Tuesday, November 15 at 4:00 p.m., when we will discuss the book The Mirrored World, by Debra Dean. From Amazon: "The critically acclaimed author of The Madonnas of Leningrad ("Elegant and poetic, the rare kind of book that you want to keep but you have to share" -Isabel Allende), Debra Dean returns with The Mirrored World, a breathtaking novel of love and madness set in 18th century Russia. Transporting readers to St. Petersburg during the reign of Catherine the Great, Dean brilliantly reconstructs and reimagines the life of St. Xenia, one of Russia's most revered and mysterious holy figures, in a richly told and thought-provoking work of historical fiction that recounts the unlikely transformation of a young girl, a child of privilege, into a saint beloved by the poor."

A Note to Middle School Youth and Parents
from our New Youth Director
Hello! If I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you, I am Miranda Harrison-Quillin, Youth Director for St. John's Church and Assistant to the Chaplain for St. John's School. As a St. John's alumna, I am so excited to be back in the place that nurtured my spiritual formation so I can be a part of the same for our kids. Our Youth Group year is off to a great start and I am writing to make sure you know about all the exciting things we have going on.
Attached is a flyer with the Youth Calendar through December. Middle School Youth Group takes place Sunday afternoons from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Youth House on the Middle Division campus of the Parish Day School. The program consists of games, snacks, and a lesson that is relevant, challenging, and age appropriate for middle schoolers. Closer to Christmas we will add a music component as well. A parent brings light snacks and drinks each week so please let me or Nick Herrin know if you are able to help support the youth in that way. We also have fun activities planned throughout the year. Coming up is a canoe trip October 27th 2-5 pm for $10. And I am looking forward to our art project that we will create over the course of Advent.
I am so glad to be at St. John's living the life of faith with our youth. Note: St. John's Youth Group is open to any middle schoolers, regardless of church attendance at St. John's or any other church. So bring your friends, the more the merrier!
Please email me or call the parish offices at 259.1570 with any questions or ideas you might have.
Grace and peace,
Miranda

Stewardship News
Do we put God first in all the circumstances of our lives? Can we see that offering praise to God, no matter what, deepens our faith? In this past Sunday's Gospel, Jesus encounters ten lepers in a village in the region between Samaria and Galilee. All ten lepers called out for mercy, having heard of His healing ministry. Jesus' love and mercy - the healing of the leprosy - was freely given to all. Yet only one, the foreigner, the Samaritan, returned to praise Jesus for the gift of his healing. The other nine may have been made clean, but through the act of praise, the Samaritan was healed.

Evensong (Church)
Evensong, like all forms of liturgical worship, has elements of drama and ritual that nourish the spiritual life of all of us. Evensong is traditionally mostly sung by a choir, with the full congregation participating throughout in thoughtful prayer, allowing the music to soothe us and to draw us closer to the presence of God. The congregation also joins in the spoken parts of the liturgy: the reciting of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer, as well as singing the hymns. As a part of the daily office, it is intended to be part of a regular discipline of worship.
At St. John's, we are able to enjoy Evensong with our wonderful choir several times a year. The next Evensong will take place on Sunday, October 20, at 5:00 p.m. Join us and wind down from a busy, fun Rally Day Roundup with quiet prayer and music!
