Your Daily Office

From Psalm 113
Give praise, you servants of the Lord;
praise the Name of the Lord.

Let the Name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth for          evermore.

From the rising of the sun to its going down
let the Name of the Lord
be praised.

The Lord is high above all nations,

and his glory above the heavens.

News

The Retirement of the Rev. Douglas E. Remer

To the People of Saint John's Parish:

During services in church on Sunday morning, August 18, I notified the parish of my intent to retire from the full-time ministry of the Church on January 2, 2014, preceded by a four-month sabbatical that I will take beginning on September 2nd of this year.  I had earlier this week notified the staff and school board of this decision.  I will be here for the next two Sundays, returning for a final service sometime in late fall or early winter.  While on sabbatical, however, and indeed throughout the rest of my life, I will always remember in my thoughts and prayers the good work that is done in this place to God's glory and the good people-you, my friends and flock-who do that work.  Please click here for my full statement.

Blessings always.

Combined Service, Guest Preacher & Parish Picnic

Join us this Sunday, August 25, for a casual combined service at 10:00 a.m., followed by our Parish Picnic!  Please bring a side dish to share with 15 of your fellow parishioners, the FATHERS will grill the main course, and the parish will provide dessert.  Enjoy fellowship and fun for all ages!

Also this Sunday, we will enjoy a guest preacher, the Rev. Christopher Butt, Dean of St. Christopher Cathedral, Bahrain.

Chris Butt was installed as Dean in October 2009. After studying geography at university, he taught for two years including one year in Kenya. He has been in parish ministry in a variety of places and contexts, most recently as Team Rector of Parish of South Gillingham in Kent in the UK. For nine years prior to that, he was Rector of Bowness-on-Windermere in the English Lake District. In the 1980s he served for seven years in Hong Kong as Chaplain of St John's Cathedral, with particular responsibility for Emmanuel Church, Pokfulam. He is married to Tricia, who was brought up in Australia. She has worked as an occupational therapist and has studied theology and contemporary art theory and has always been actively involved in both children's and music ministry. They have three adult daughters: Alexandra (who is married to Dan), Hannah and Philippa.

St. Christopher's Cathedral is sited in the heart of Manama, a haven of peace in the midst of a bustling city.  The Cathedral is home to an international community drawn from all the continents of the world: a diverse mix of people of many nationalities, ages and backgrounds.

From the Cathedral website:

St Christopher's Cathedral is an Anglican Church, part of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, but don't imagine we are large, austere and unapproachable. We are the 'Cathedral of the Gulf' and home to the Bishop's 'cathedra' (his seat), but like a parish church, we aim to welcome everyone, whether a visitor or a resident, whatever their religious background. We are always especially delighted to welcome those who are new to Bahrain and many from a variety of denominations find their home with us during their time here.

Your Action Needed

Faith Café News

Thank you to all our volunteers who have been serving the homeless and needy at the new Faith Café on the last two or three Fridays each month.

Last Friday, a number of parishioners including Melinda Pendino, Lesley Hanlon, Sally Wiley, Jim Voss, Nicholas Nitch, Mary Jane Schenck and other generous souls helped at the Café cooking, cleaning, and serving the patrons in need.

Won't you help too?

We have a great need for people who are willing to be drivers to pick up the food at Metropolitan Ministries, then deliver it to the new Faith Café. The time commitment need not be great --as little as an hour (if you just drop off food), or maximum three (if you stay to serve) on Friday morning between 10:30-1:00. If you can volunteer one Friday a month, it would be a big help.  Drivers need an SUV or truck, or know someone who would be willing to let you use one for that short period.  We'd also like to encourage
a few people to volunteer to be the "Coordinator for the Day."  The group has been depending very heavily on Nicholas Nitch to fulfill that role, and he needs to have some back-up.  For more details, please contact Mary Jane Schenck (813-837-9428  or mjschenck@ut.edu).

The patrons of Faith Café are also in dire need of pants, t-shirts, shorts, and casual running shoes.  If you have new or gently used items to contribute, please bring them to the parish offices during the week or after services on Sundays.

Candle and Flowers Available

The candle in the sanctuary light is available on September 22 and 29. The flowers at the chapel altar are available on September 1. If you are interested in honoring a loved one and supporting St. John's on one of these dates, please contact the parish offices at parish@stjohnstampa.org, or by calling 259.1570.

Hearing Aids Available

If you or a loved one attends services on Sundays at St. John's but needs a little help hearing, ask any usher and they will help you borrow one of the parish's hearing assistance devices.

If you would like your information to be included in next week's Scroll, please email all content by Monday at 9:00 a.m.
to Lee Lowry at LLowry@stjohnstampa.org.

Saturday, August 24: The Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle
Feast Day Facts
Bartholomew is one of the twelve Apostles known to us only by his being listed among them in the Gospels.  He is sometimes identified with Nathanael, the friend of Philip, in John's Gospel, to whom Jesus promised the vision of angels ascending  and descending on the Son of Man.  Nothing more is heard of him in the four Gospels.  Some sources credit Bartholomew with having written a Gospel, but if he did, it is lost to us.  Despite the fact that we know so little about him, his feast day has been a traditional occasion for markets and fairs, such as the Bartholomew Fair held in London since the Middle Ages and which served as the scene for Ben Jonson's homonymous comedy.
