Safeguarding God's Children: Saturday, August 10
This Saturday, August 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, in Rudisill Parish Hall, St. John's will hold the diocese-mandated Safeguarding God's Children class for all parishioners, staff, and clergy who interact with children on behalf of our church and school.

Those who must take it include all members of the Vestry, all paid employees (including choir members), and anyone who is involved with children (including parents who teach Sunday School, chaperone events, or even drive other children home).  Other parents or grandparents who would like to take it are also welcome.  Please call the parish offices at 259.1570 with questions.

Faith Café News

Faith CafeThank you to all our volunteers who have been serving the homeless  and needy at the new Faith Café on the last two or three Fridays each month. The number of guests is steadily climbing, and all of us find it a wonderful ministry.

We have a great need for people who are willing to be drivers to pick up the food at Metropolitan Ministries, then deliver it to the new Faith Café. The time commitment need not be great --as little as an hour (if you just drop off food), or maximum three (if you stay to serve) on Friday morning between 10:30-1:00. If you could volunteer one Friday a month, it would be a big help.  Drivers need an SUV or truck, or know someone who would be willing to let you use one for that short period.  We'd also like to encourage a few people to volunteer to be the "Coordinator for the Day."  We have been depending very heavily on Nicholas Nitch to fulfill that role, and he needs to have some back-up.  For more details, please contact Mary Jane Schenck (813-837-9428  or mjschenck@ut.edu).

Faith Café is also in dire need of pants, t-shirts, shorts, and casual running shoes.  If you have new or gently used items to contribute, please bring them to the parish offices during the week or after services on Sundays.
Stephen Ministry Classes Offered

The St. John's Stephen Ministry team is offering a new class for Stephen Ministry, the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations using the Stephen Series system.

This ministry equips and empowers lay caregivers - called Stephen Ministers - to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.   The training will be weekly, each Monday (6:30 - 9:00 p.m.) starting November 4 and concluding in May of 2014.

If you feel you might be called to apply to become a Stephen Minister, please contact Carol Ihrig or Fr. Doug Zimmerman.

Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.   - Galatians 6:2, NRSV

It's Personal
A four session DVD by Andy Stanley

You don't have to understand everything to believe in something...

This powerful series is directed to men and women who desire a personal connection with God, but who have genuine questions, doubts, and concerns. In his creative and casual style, Andy Stanley makes a case for the fact that adults don't become followers of Christ by getting all their questions answered. In most instances, something happens that shrinks those questions. and that something is always personal.

If there are obstacles that make it difficult for you to embrace the message of Jesus, or if circumstances have derailed your confidence in God, you may walk away with the feeling that this series was designed specifically for you. And perhaps it was.

After all, it's personal.

Andy Stanley is the son of Dr. Charles F. Stanley, the senior pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta and founder of InTouch Ministries.  Andy received a bachelor's degree of journalism from Georgia State University and later earned a Master's degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. After working for several years as Associate Pastor and Minister to Students at First Baptist Atlanta, he and five others founded North Point Community Church in 1995. The church has now grown to five campuses and over 24,000 attendees each week, making it the second largest church in the United States.
