Stephen Ministry Classes Offered

The St. John's Stephen Ministry team is offering a new class for Stephen Ministry, the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations using the Stephen Series system.

This ministry equips and empowers lay caregivers - called Stephen Ministers - to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.   The training will be weekly, each Monday (6:30 - 9:00 p.m.) starting November 4 and concluding in May of 2014.

If you feel you might be called to apply to become a Stephen Minister, please contact Carol Ihrig or Fr. Doug Zimmerman.

Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.   - Galatians 6:2, NRSV

Food for Thought from The Christian Pundit
Click here for an interesting article on the appeal to young people of traditional, formal Christian worship in an age of mega-churches.  Do these echo your own reasons for choosing St. John's?

The Christian Pundit is an engaging and eclectic blog posting new content on weekdays.  From the site: "Why The Christian Pundit? As we read, listen, and watch, moments keep coming where we want to share what we've learned, and sometimes add our own thoughts. We want to help Christians read and listen to good stuff, think through it, live it by grace, and give thanks to God. At the same time, when writing and commenting, we want to remember that we're mere pundits who reflect wisdom only in Christ, the Word who is true wisdom: 'To God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.' Jude 25"
Sock Collection Continues
The collection of socks for the patrons of Faith Cafe, spearheaded by young parishioner Peter Arcuri, continues this week.  Please bring socks to the parish offices or to services on Sunday.  Contact Leland Baldwin with questions.

It's Personal
A four session DVD by Andy Stanley

You don't have to understand everything to believe in something...

This powerful series is directed to men and women who desire a personal connection with God, but who have genuine questions, doubts, and concerns. In his creative and casual style, Andy Stanley makes a case for the fact that adults don't become followers of Christ by getting all their questions answered. In most instances, something happens that shrinks those questions. and that something is always personal.

If there are obstacles that make it difficult for you to embrace the message of Jesus, or if circumstances have derailed your confidence in God, you may walk away with the feeling that this series was designed specifically for you. And perhaps it was.

After all, it's personal.

Andy Stanley is the son of Dr. Charles F. Stanley, the senior pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta and founder of InTouch Ministries.  Andy received a bachelor's degree of journalism from Georgia State University and later earned a Master's degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. After working for several years as Associate Pastor and Minister to Students at First Baptist Atlanta, he and five others founded North Point Community Church in 1995. The church has now grown to five campuses and over 24,000 attendees each week, making it the second largest church in the United States.

Bring yo
ur study Bible, a covered dish, and an open heart and mind for fellowship and stimulating conversation.  Contact Paul and Winkie Game at pgamefla@aol.com for more details.

Feast Day Facts

Thursday, July 25, The Feast of Saint James the Apostle

James is often called James the Greater, to distinguish him from the other apostle of the same name whose feast day is May 3, and from James, "the brother of our Lord." James the Greater was the son of a prosperous fisherman named Zebedee, and with his brother John left his home and his trade in obedience to the call of Christ. Obedient James may have been, but he also apparently shared his brother's hot-headed disposition, so much so that Jesus nicknamed them "Boanerges" or "Sons of Thunder."

Herod killed James with the sword, making him the first to die for Jesus. His body was taken to Compostela, Spain, which has been a shrine for pilgrims for centuries, as James is one of the Spaniards' most popular saints and has become the country's patron saint. So many faithful made the pilgrimage to Compostela that it became the third greatest place of pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Rome.

One strange and lovely legend about the journey of the saint to Spain regards when the saint's relics were being conveyed by ship from Jerusalem. As the ship approached the coast of Portugal, a man happened to be riding his horse on the beach. The horse plunged into the sea with its rider, making for the boat. They sank, but then rose again from the waves covered in scallop shells. After making one of the many routes to the shrine of St. James, known as "the Camino," pilgrims attach scallop shells or their facsimile to their hats or clothes as "pilgrim badges," signs that they had venerated the holy relics.

It is customary for the English to eat oysters on this day, as it is said that "who eats oysters on St James' Day will never want." The French eat scallops -- named "coquilles St. Jacques" -- "shells of St. James" -- in his honor. In Spain, the day is a national holiday. In Compostela, there are great processions and the famous La Fachada fireworks display. From the ceiling of the great cathedral hangs a six-foot-tall 14th century censer (the "botafumeiro") that is swung by pulleys on this day and for a few other great Feasts. At St. John's, we will be more low-key but no less reverent; a Eucharist will be celebrated in the chapel on Thursday the 25th at 10:00 a.m.
