Sandwich Sunday Is This Week!

Now that Faith Café has opened in their new space, we are able to deliver bagged meals to them again for the deserving people who come there for lunch. The first assembly session will be after the 9:00 a.m. service this Sunday, April 21. Please join us in the parish hall, many hands make light work! Thanks to the Johnson family for being our hosts this week!

We are also in need of other families to sponsor this important outreach on July 21 and August 18. If you can help, contact Amanda Sansone at asansone@carltonfields.com or 220.5573, she will be the temporary coordinator.

The 13th Annual Mother's Day Ingathering for the  Mothers and Babies of Alpha House

May 12, 2013

While Mom will get lots of "Luvs" and "Huggies" on her special day, remember that others need to be pampered too! We can help the mothers and babies at Alpha House by bringing "Wish List" items on (or before) Mother's Day Sunday, May 12. Collection bags with wish lists will be distributed following all services on April 28 and May 5 and will also be available at the reception desk outside of the parish offices. Cash and gently used in-kind donations are also appreciated. All donations will be collected in the garth prior to all three services on Mother's Day, or drop off in the parish offices before May 12.

Volunteers are needed to distribute collection bags following all three services on April 28 and May 5. If you planning to attend and can lend a hand, please call Ruth Giordano at 254-4332.

Children's Wish List items include: Diapers (all sizes including pull ups), wipes, baby food, bibs, clothing (infant though age 3) , baby wash and shampoo, diaper rash cream, sunscreen, Aquaphor products, crib sheets, strollers and car seats (infant and toddler), baby monitors, new undergarments and socks, toys.

Mother's Wish List items include: gift cards (grocery, Wal-Mart, etc.), towels/wash cloths, twin sized bedding/pillows, full size toiletry (alcohol-free/Aveeno oatmeal products), sanitary items, grooming items for nails and hair, perfume, makeup, plastic storage bins, non-disposable plastic dishes and cups, flatware, bus passes, wallets, stationary and stamps, books, Band-Aids, Cetaphil cleanser, antiseptic and hydrocortisone products, lanolin, new undergarments and slippers.

Alpha House is an accredited, not-for-profit, local organization that was founded in 1981. Its mission is "to offer homeless pregnant women and mothers with young children safe housing and the tools they need to become self-sufficient, effective and responsible parents". This mission is accomplished through the provision of "safe housing, education, counseling, parenting and life skills training, vocational assistance, and spiritual support." The women live in the 20-bed maternity home or in the post-birth transitional apartments. The agency serves about 200 pregnant or parenting women and children each year.

Please call Ruth Giordano or email tampagio@aol.com with any questions.

Your Action Needed
Meals on Wheels Annual Water Drive

In preparation for hurricane season, Meals on Wheels is once again collecting one-gallon jugs of water for distribution to their recipients.  If a hMeals on Wheelsurricane were to hit Tampa and the volunteers unable to deliver meals, the recipients could be without food and water.  For the past several years, The Junior League of Tampa has partnered with Meals on Wheels to ensure that these most vulnerable citizens have food and water set aside in case of a hurricane or other emergency.  The Junior League purchases five shelf-stable meals for each of the 720 MOW recipients, and churches throughout Tampa are asked to donate one-gallon jugs of water.  In May, the Junior League delivers these emergency supplies to all MOW recipients.  This helps them have peace of mind during the hurricane season even though they cannot get to get to the store.

As in the past, you may drop the jugs of water off at the parish offices no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6.  If you want to take your water to the MOW Office yourself, they are open between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The MOW office is located at 550 West Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa, FL 33603.  Thank you for your support of this important ministry!

Don't Forget to be Neighborly!
Please don't forget to follow all traffic laws and regard all posted parking signs when arriving for services or any other St. John's-sponsored event.  We want to be good neighbors and respect the homes and property of our fellow Hyde Park residents.

A few specific reminders:
  • No car may park closer than 10 feet from any driveway or intersection.
  • Cars may not park in designated "no parking" zones, even for a brief time.
  • Posted speed limits must be adhered to at all times.

Candle and Flowers Available

The flowers at the church altar are available on June 2 and June 9.  The flowers at the chapel altar are available on June 30.  The candle in the sanctuary light is available on May 12, May 19, and June 23.  If you are interested in honoring a loved one and supporting St. John's on any of these dates, please contact the parish offices at parish@stjohnstampa.org, or by calling 259.1570.
