| Sunday, January 6: The Epiphany of our Lord
|
Feast Day Facts: The Epiphany
The name "Epiphany" is derived from a Greek word meaning "manifestation" or "appearing." Anglican Prayer Books interpret the word with an alternative title, "The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles." The last phrase, of course, is a reference to the story of the Wise Men from the East.
A Christian observance on January 6 is found as early as the end of the second century in Egypt. The feast combined commemorations of the visit of the Magi, led by the star of Bethlehem; the Baptism of Jesus in the waters of the River Jordan; and Jesus' first recorded miracle, the changing of water into wine at the marriage of Cana of Galilee-all thought of as manifestations of the incarnate Lord.
The Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated widely across the globe in ways ranging from children leaving their shoes by the door, along with grass and water for the camels of the Magi (Argentina) to first fasting and then eating quantities of taro (Coptic Christians in Egypt) to eating gteau des Rois (Provence) or Buchteln (Switzerland), a type of king cake, with a trinket hidden within the layers of pastry. In England, the celebration of the Night before Epiphany, Epiphany Eve, is known as Twelfth Night, and was a traditional time for mumming and the wassail. The yule log was left burning until this day, and the charcoal left was kept until the next Christmas to kindle next year's yule log, as well as to protect the house from fire and lightning.
Water plays a major role in many Epiphany celebrations, from the blessing of water to commemorate Jesus' baptism in Russia, India, and Finland to a unique piece of Romanian folk wisdom that holds that if a girl slips on ice - or better yet falls into water- on Epiphany, she will surely marry before the year is out. Locally, the Greek Orthodox church in Tarpon Springs, St. Nicholas, annually holds a cross diving, wherein 48 young men dive into the waters of the springs to retrieve a white cross. It is believed that the cross victor will be specially blessed during the year to come.
