The Circle Enjoys Fellowship, Feast

On Sunday, November 11, the St. John's Circle group met at the home of Pamela and Pickens Price to enjoy a Cuban style feast!  Co-hosts Kim  and Stephen French prepared chicken and yellow rice, and attendees brought deliciously garlicky "1905" salad, a lovely eggplant tian, and creamy flan to cap off the meal.  The Circle is comprised of St. John's parishioners who gather every few months to enjoy each others' company.

Angel Tree Season is Here!

Angel Pick Up Days: Sundays, November 18 and 25

Angel Tree Party: Saturday, December 8, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This year we are fortunate to have 180 children assigned to St. John's! Please stop in the Garth following the 9:00 a.m. service on November 18 and 25 to select your angels from the tree. While there, take the opportunity to sign up to be a driver or helper on the day of the party.

Angel Tree is a ministry that reaches out to

the children of prison inmates and their families with the love of Christ. This unique program gives our church an opportunity to share Christ's love by helping to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners.

Our party this year is on Saturday, December 8, and we hope everyone will want to participate. As always, the organizers need volunteers to help with the party, as well as cash donations to help with our expenses. PLEASE BE AN ANGEL AND HELP!! Questions? Email Ginny VanOsdol at ginny@towntoiles.com.

Faith Café Update

The search for a new site for Faith Café began in the spring of 2011. Since then, the group has raised almost $400,000 from small and large donations. They have purchased the property, the site has been cleared, and the concrete slab was poured on October 31, 2012!  They currently have $284,000 in their building fund after paying for the land and the permitting fees.   The cost for the building is $368,000 and they also need to purchase interior furnishings, as well as cover operating expenses for 2013.  Therefore, the Café hopes to raise a final $200,000 by December 31.  To contribute construction materials, contact Burk Clark at Burk@thesinclairgroup.com.  To donate funds, contact Mary Jane Schenck or Hugh Cruse (mjschenck@ut.edu or hugh.cruse@gmail.com), or donate directly through the website www.faithcafetampa.com. Some smaller items needed are: a commercial dishwasher, washable plastic plates and glasses, and a microwave.

Please give prayerful consideration to donating so that Faith Café can re-open its doors and serve a hot noontime meal to over 100 very needy members of our community six days a week.

Hurricane Sandy and the Dominican Republic

For the last four years, the Tampa Deanery has worked in the community of La Barquita (Santo Domingo), building a new church and school building. As with all of the buildings we work on in the Dominican Republic, they are designed to be hurricane shelters.  You may recall this building was redesigned prior to construction, and the floor elevation was raised 4' higher out of concern that the flood-prone community would eventually need a safe building to protect them from the Rio Ozama when it floods.  As Hurricane Sandy tore across the island of Hispaniola last week, many parts of the DR and Haiti were flooded.  La Barquita was hit very hard, with floods destroying homes and displacing hundreds.  More than 100 children and 66 adults were protected and housed in the new San Pedro and San Pablo church/school building.  Many of these families have lost everything.

Area bishops and others have visited the community and determined the immediate need is for food, water, bedding, and mosquito nets.  If you are able to contribute to help the flood victims in the La Barquita or other DR communities affected by Hurricane Sandy, please send your tax deductible donations to: Dominican Development Group, P.O. Box 661, Ellenton, Florida 34222.  Please note that the donation is to be designated for flood relief. As with all money collected through the DDG, 100% of your donation is sent to the project or cause designated by you, the donor.  You may also donate through PayPal on our website,  www.dominicandevelopmentgroup.org.  For more information, contact Bill Kunkle, 813.310.0267, or  tuulguy@aol.com.

In addition, Episcopal Relief and Development continues to help areas in  the Caribbean and in the Northeastern United States.  To assist them in this work, you can donate to their US Hurricane Relief Fund or Hurricane Fund (for the Caribbean) at http://er-d.org/donate-select.php or you can send a donation to P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield,VA 22116-7058.  More information can be found at Episcopal Relief Development's website.

If you would like your information to be included in next week's Scroll, please email all content by Monday at 9:00 a.m.
to Lee Lowry at LLowry@stjohnstampa.org.
