Gala Organ & Choir Concert Featuring David Briggs
This Friday, October 19, 7:30 p.m., Church
This concert will feature David Briggs, former organist of Truro and Gloucester Cathedrals in England, where our own Simon Morley served as his assistant during the early '90s. Mr. Briggs is one of the world's foremost organists and composers, and is especially known for his skill in the art of improvisation. This concert has been subtitled "The Notre Dame Experience," not least because of Mr. Briggs' affinity with French organ music and the Parisian organ scene. At this concert, Mr. Briggs will be joined by our St. John's Ensemble in a performance of "Messe Solennelle" of Louis Vierne. Vierne was himself organist of Notre Dame Cathedral from 1900 until his death (at the console of the organ) in 1937.
We hope you will join us for what promises to be a spectacular concert event! Admission to the concert is free. A reception will follow in Rudisill Parish Hall.

Feast Day Facts: St. Luke the Evangelist
Luke was a Gentile, a physician by profession, and one of Paul's fellow missionaries in the early spread of Christianity through the Roman world. He has been identified as the writer of both the Gospel which bears his name, and its sequel, the Acts of the Apostles. He had apparently not known Jesus, but was clearly much inspired by hearing about him from those who had known him. Only Luke provides the very familiar stories of the annunciation to Mary, of her visit to Elizabeth, of the child in the manger, the angelic host appearing to shepherds, and the meeting with the aged Simeon in his Gospel.
Luke was with Paul apparently until the latter's martyrdom in Rome. What happened to Luke after Paul's death is unknown. Early tradition is that he wrote his Gospel in Greece, and that he died at the age of 84 in Boeotia. Luke is the patron saint of artists, physicians, surgeons, students, and butchers. There is a Christian tradition that states that Luke was the first icon painter, painting pictures of the Virgin Mary and of Peter and Paul. He is sometimes depicted this way, with or creating works of art, as above. He is also often accompanied by an ox or bull, sometimes with wings as can be seen here, or the symbol of such is used alone to represent the saint.
Please join us today for a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 10:00 a.m. in honor of the feast day of Luke.
