Is Diving Dangerous?
If you are a diver, chances are pretty good that sometime, probably several times, someone has asked you the question, " Isn't diving dangerous?" Even among scuba divers animated discussions come up fairly often on this issue. It is a really good question. And I think the correct answer to the question is this...

Everybody loves Nudibranches.
Searching to find them can be like a treasure hunt (with the greatest reward being to show your buddy a cool one before they've seen it), and their beautiful colors ...

Hello there
That's it! Winter is here, I am basing this purely on the fact that it is almost impossible to get my behind out of bed every morning. In actual fact just sticking my nose out from under the duvet requires unbelievable strength and courage! And I only have to be in the office at 9am.
So am focusing on when the pretty little pink flowers appear on the trees because that is the anthem in South Africans to celebrate sun, fun and good times!
As you can see we have changed the format of the newsletter (which is why it is a wee bit late) but hopefully it will inspire you to join us on a trip or two, or even try a "dry diving course" like nitrox or equipment speciality. Most probably am pushing my luck now, but maybe just maybe you guys will join us on an inland diving trip! Promise it is actually pretty awesome when everything is settled, there is no muck or algae, and the viz is awesome. Guess I can still dream :)
Enjoy the newsletter and please give us some feedback!
Cheers Mandy
P.S The first one to point out a mistake... has to buy me a bottle of wine heheheheP.P.S Next time you see Adrian if you liked the newsletter give him a pat on the back as he did the majority of the work.

Experiences shared from our latest Aliwal trip!
Hi to all my dive buddies. I just want to tell you about our amazing trip to Aliwal Shoal, one of my best trips ever.
On the Friday (Gaza's boat) we did a nice relaxing reef dive. Just drifting along and enjoy the entire beautiful underwater world. With 15m viz, absolutely stunning sceneries, drifting over Raggies cave, found a raggie tooth in the sand. Whoop whoop.
On the Saturday (Andre Maene's boat) sorry Gaza, did the Baited Shark dive early the morning, with Lloyd on the boat. So much fun and laughter telling us to smile before the boat launch "for dental records because it's the only thing the Sharks don't eat". Ja sure hehehehe...........
What an awesome experience seeing 31 Black tip sharks swimming around us. If you never had this experience you need to make a plan next time. It's an experience of a lifetime that you will forever treasure. The next dive was an absolutely amazing dive to the Produce, 20m viz, again sorry Gary hehehehe but Andre's boat was the best hehehehe. Seeing this big ship laying on the bottom of the ocean was magnificent. We saw a lot of Raggy Scorpion fish, the fish life in an around the ship is abundant and the coral is beautiful! . Please guys you need to do the wreck specialty and join us on the next trip to Aliwal, you will never stop diving the wreck again, because it is just so beautiful!
On the Sunday (very sad because it was our last day again) back on Gaza's boat diving the Nebo. What a ship!!!! A huge bait ball of fish in the middle of the wreck with big fish hunting between them, what an experience! All the beautiful yellow coral on the one side of the wreck with hundreds of Scorpion fish and a stone fish again. We even saw a scorpion fish swimming, amazing.
It was really such a great weekend with the best friends ever, good food and awesome diving. I hope you will join us on the next Aliwal Shoal trip!!.

Every year around June and July billons of Sardines "run" or migrate up the East Coast of Africa between Port Elizabeth and Durban. What makes it a true marvel however is not simply the multitude of silvery fish but the host of predators that congregate in mass for the feasting!

by Kim Browne
Dear Scubaversity team
Just a short note to thank you all for teaching the Browne clan the lifeskill of diving. It really does open a whole new world!
Our experience (journey) was as much fun as the destination (dive holiday at Rocktail Bay) and we are so glad we did it with Scubaversity. We are completely hooked on diving now. We actually miss our weekends training! This is definitely not only because recreational diving as an activity is awesome - but also because we had the best possible instruction from Gordon and Sonja. They both went well beyond any expectation we may have had :)
We like to do things properly and thoroughly and really believe we got the best introduction and instruction both in terms of theory and practical. The experience we got both in the pool and Bass Lake more than equipped us to be able to dive in the ocean.
A few points worth highlighting:
- Dylan (aged 11) was apprehensive about possibly seeing sharks and that they may eat him. Gordon handled this perfectly, by changing it into a bet - something he looked forward to actually doing.
- Despite torrid weather when we left for Bass Lake, the children were so excited - the rain and cold did little to deter their excitement and we had a great, memorable weekend anyway.
- We had to complete the full course in a short space of time - Gordon and Sonja ensured we got through it all in time, without compromising on the quality.
- Both Zoe and Dylan were ecstatic to get their temporary dive "licence" - seeing it as a huge achievement.
- Scubaversity went out of their way to ensure we had the necessary documentation to ensure we could actually dive on holiday, in spite of huge time constraints
- Gordon and Sonja loaned us personal dive gear, until we could purchase our own and assisted us greatly in buying the right gear for our needs (in the right colours).
- I have underwater pictures of our experience at Bass Lake
- When I took water through my nose during a mask clearing exercise, resulting in not being able to get breath - Gordon coached me through the experience, so I got through it, without bailing!
- Gordon phoned ahead to the dive centre at Rocktail Bay - so when we got there, they already knew a lot about us. We really bonded with them - which ensured an unforgettable dive experience for our family.
I am now a member of Scubaversity and have recommended it strongly to other diver friends and family :)
Our dive holiday at Rocktail Bay was really an incredible life experience for us. Thank you to the Scubaversity team for introducing us to the incredible world of scuba diving. Gordon, Sonja and the rest of the team get 11/10 from all of us (including teenager Zoe Browne (aged 14). Dylan can't wait to be able to wear Scubaversity gear with pride. We look forward to many more shared dive experiences.
Your enthusiasm, passion, commitment to our dive training was exemplary.
Thank you for enriching our lives.

Join us for the Sardine Run this Year!
The action is amazing and you are often surrounded by hundreds of dolphin, sharks, diving birds, whales, game fish, seals and of course millions of sardines that make this one of nature's most awesome events.
The waters off the breathtaking Wild Coast literally boil as Dolphins, Sharks, Whales, Seals, Penguins, Cape Gannets and even Orca's (Killer Whales) gorge themselves on the seemingly endless shoals of sardines. |
Meet our new Instructors.

After a lot of blood, sweat and tears (well not really :)) we have four brand new instructors at Scubaversity.
Congratulations Adrian, Andre, Jean-Pierre (JP) and Tiaan. Welcome to the "hood" guys we look forward to training with you!

'Friendlier' shark barrier designed by SA boffins
Cape Town - Stellenbosch University scientists have developed an eco-friendly shark barrier which can be used as an alternative to a shark net.
The barrier is called "Sharksafe".
Shark nets were introduced to reduce the number of shark attacks on swimmers but they have resulted in the death of other sea animals including dolphins and turtles.
