August 2016
Photo of the Month
A newborn calf drinks his or her own mother's milk during the calf's first three days of life. This special milk is called colostrum. Calves have a small window of time for the antibodies in the colostrum to be absorbed into their system to help protect them from illness.

After those first days, the calves will share a mom (or 2). One cow averages 10 gallons of milk a day. That is enough to feed up to 10 calves a day! Calves are bottle-fed so we can make certain they are getting enough nutrition to stay healthy and grow in to beautiful cows. If you want to help feed our calves, call us today to schedule a hands-on tour. Make reservations at 319-939-2187 and visit our website for more details.

Hansen's Dairy products recognized

Hansen's Dairy has been recognized statewide this summer for their ice cream, cheese curds and milk.

The Des Moines Register mentioned Hansen's Dairy cheese curds in their article "Iowa's growing cheese industry takes center stage."

The Hansen's Dairy Waterloo store was also featured as No. 6 on Travel Iowa's web site for "21 Cool Ice Cream Shops."

And for something new, we are joining with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to provide fresh, nutritious milk to those in need. Hansen's Dairy is committed to donating 100 gallons of milk each week, and the Food Bank is committed to purchasing 400 gallons of milk from Hansen's Dairy each week. Together, we will help fight hunger in our community!

Customer of the Month
Lindsay Niebuhr, left, and husband Adam
The August Customer of the Month is Lindsay Niebuhr of Fairbank.

Lindsay, like many of our customers, has been answering some of our contest questions on Facebook. Every Tuesday, we post a different question about our products. If you comment, you are entered into a drawing to win a free gallon of milk!

Lindsay shops at both of our retail stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. She enjoys using our products in many different ways.

"We LOVE all the great products available at Hansen's. Our favorite is Hansen's milk," she says, adding that she uses it in her iced coffees and over the granola available at our stores. "It is so fresh and delicious. We love supporting a local farm, and the people that work at Hansen's are the nicest people around!"

She also has a suggestion for other customers: "When you stop in, be sure to get an ice cream cone or one of their famous cookie ice cream sandwiches!"

Thanks, Lindsay! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and hands-on tour passes to visit the farm. Submit your entries at each of our stores in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. You could also be selected from your comments on Facebook.

Cow of the Month
The August Cow of the Month is Lion Lion is 3 years old and has had two calves: a bull (2015) and a heifer we named Lionking (2016). Lion is one of the nicest looking cows in the barn and is producing 120 pounds of milk a day (that's 14 gallons)! Compare that to our cows' average of 86 pounds (10 gallons) per day. Lion makes it look easy! She is put together well and has longevity in her genes.

Let's hope she can manage through the rest of the summer heat along with the rest of the cows. We have several methods to help keep our cows more comfortable (sprinklers, fans, A/C milking parlor), but you just can't escape this heat. Lion continues to amaze us with her high production even when the heat is on.

The next time you are here for a tour be sure to look for Lionking!

Cooking with Hansen's
Beef Sliders with Chipotle Yogurt Sauce and Cheddar Cheese
Yield: 6 servings
Total Time: 25 minutes

Don't let their size fool you; these mini-burgers pack a flavorful punch. The starred ingredients can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores.

SAUCE INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 tsp nonfat plain Greek yogurt*
  • 1-2 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, chopped
  • 1 tsp adobo sauce
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
SLIDERS INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 pound Hansen's Dairy ground beef*
  • 6 whole wheat slider buns
  • 6 slices of Cedar Grove mild Cheddar cheese*
DIRECTIONS

For sauce, in a medium bowl, combine yogurt, chipotle pepper(s), adobo sauce, and cumin. Stir until well blended. Cover and chill to allow flavors to blend.

For sliders, shape beef into 6 patties about 3 inches in diameter. Cook beef on an outdoor grill or a grill pan over medium heat until center registers 160°F with a quick-read thermometer, turning once during cooking. Remove from heat.

Spread 1 tablespoon, divided, Chipotle Yogurt Sauce, on top and bottom of each bun. Transfer each beef patty onto a bottom bun. Add a cheese quarter and top bun to each slider. Serve warm.

Recipe Variations:

Instead of Chipotle Yogurt Sauce and Cheddar cheese, top with Creamy Guacamole and Havarti, Farmers or Smoked Gouda; or with Marble Colby Cheese, sliced tomatoes and lettuce leaves.

Cash Cow
We had a couple of winners in our July CA$H COW contest: Melanie Schmidt of Cedar Falls, Deepanee Samarakoon of Cedar Falls, and another customer from Cedar Falls each found a $5 jug.

Every month we mark several of our gallon milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label. Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100". There are 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. Since no on found a $100 jug in July, there will be six lucky jugs marked with $100 in August.
