Then on Saturday, June 18, we are celebrating Hansen's Dairy Moo Roo's 10th anniversary in Waterloo. Join us from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a $4 meal featuring local foods and our ice cream, free samples from our vendors, and balloons and games for the kids.

Now that Kimball Avenue road construction is complete, our building facade is done and our new exterior signage is up, we want to think of this party as a grand reopening. We thank our customers for your loyalty and support over the past 10 years. Hope to see you there!
Photo of the Month
The tractors, mower and wagons have been busy this month making hay! We raise all of our own hay silage and corn silage to feed the cows. Each milking cow will eat 90 pounds of this "salad" each day ... so we need to raise a lot of feed! See more fun photos of farm happenings when you follow us on Instagram. Hands-on tours take place at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday (by appointment only). Reserve your spot today by calling (319) 939-2187. Specials for your special dads
Hansen's Dairy in Waterloo will have free sundaes for dads on Father's Day, June 19. Hansen's Dairy in Cedar Falls will have free "cow-size" soft-serve cones that day for dads as well.
Be listening to The Mix 93.5 this month as they have a "Grillin' and Chillin' with Dad" contest. Listeners can nominate their dad to win a prize package with a grill, local meat package from Hansen's Dairy, Dads root beer, golf passes and other prizes.
Cedar Falls store offering fresh Milkbox bread daily 
Milkbox Bakery breads

Hansen's Dairy in Cedar Falls is now selling a variety of freshly baked breads by Milkbox Bakery, Monday through Saturday of each week. Milkbox Bakery is a new business owned and operated by Andrea Geary of Cedar Falls. Geary previously owned and operated a retail/commercial bakery in Illinois before returning to her home state of Iowa, where she worked for a time at UNI advocating for local food and farms. 
 
Milkbox Bakery focuses on artisan breads, sandwich loaves, pastries, and specialty desserts hand-crafted daily with locally produced ingredients. Hansen's Dairy will offer a variety of breads from Rustic White sandwich loaves to a grain-dense Mightiest Multigrain, with the potential for more products to come. 
 
Milkbox Bakery also offers a subscription and weekly delivery service for their breads and pastries, with custom-made specialty desserts available for delivery as well. Subscribers receive a hand-built milkbox to store near their front door for receiving their weekly deliveries, which was the inspiration for the name of the business.

Customer of the Month
The June Customer of the Month is Leslie Cohn of Cedar Falls.

Leslie and her family have been buying our products since the Waterloo store opened in 2006 -- and they waited anxiously for our store to open in Cedar Falls in 2007. 

"I definitely like to support the Buy Fresh, Buy Local movement and products that I know have come from the community," Leslie says. "You have local foods when the farmers' markets aren't open. If something looks interesting, I'll pick it up."

Her favorite items are Hansen's milk and ice cream and the locally sourced eggs. "I get them here only!"

Cow of the Month
June 2016 Cow of the Month
The June Cow of the Month is Dot. 
Dot is about 5 years old and ready to have her next calf on July 14. 

When you meet this girl, she is quick to impress. Dot is our heaviest and one of our tallest cows in the herd. We estimate her weight to be around 2,000 pounds (yes, about 1 ton!). Being big does not interrupt her relationship with people. She is a gentle giant and loves all the tourists who stop to give her attention. They love that she actually has a "dot" on her head. 

After calving this year, Dot has the ability to produce a large amount of milk. She also has the power and strength to stay in the herd for many years to come.

Tuscana Soup with
Sausage, Potato and Kale
Yield: 12 servings
Total Time: 50 minutes

This hearty soup is a simple-to-prepare soup that will satisfy the tastebuds. The starred ingredients can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 pound sausage* (with the addition of a few ingredients you can make it spicy)
  • 3 cups cubed potatoes 
  • 5 ½ cups whole milk*
  • 4 teaspoons butter*
  • 2 cups chicken broth 
  • 1 chopped onion
  •  ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ½ ground black pepper
  • 2 cups torn kale leaves* (bite size)
  • ½ cup heavy cream*
  • Optional shredded parmesan cheese*
     
DIRECTIONS 
Heat a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Crumble sausage into pot; cook and stir until browned, about 10 minutes. Drain and discard grease.

Stir potatoes, chicken broth, milk, butter, onion, oregano, and red pepper flakes into sausage, bring to a boil, and reduce heat to low. Simmer until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes. Season with black pepper; stir kale into soup. Simmer until kale is tender, 10 to 15 more minutes. Add cream over low heat (do not boil), and serve. Soup can be topped with fresh shredded parmesan cheese.

Cash Cow

Every month we mark several of our gallon milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label. Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100". There are 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. There will be four lucky jugs marked with $100 in June.
