Photo of the Month
April showers bring rainbows! Here the Hansen cows are oblivious to the vivid colors in the sky, but together they make a nice photo. See more fun photos of farm happenings when you follow us on Instagram. Then take a tour of the farm and tag "hansen_dairy" with your photos!

Hands-on tours take place at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday (by appointment only). Reserve your spot today by calling (319) 939-2187. Participants can take a trolley ride around the farm (weather permitting), milk a cow, bottle-feed a calf, pet kangaroos, make your own butter and enjoy our tasty products. Hansen's Dairy is proud to be part of the local food movement and we enjoy showing people how our milk gets from the cow to their table. More info on our website.

Cedar Falls store offering fresh Milkbox bread daily
Milkbox Bakery breads

Hansen's Dairy in Cedar Falls is now selling a variety of freshly baked breads by Milkbox Bakery, Monday through Saturday of each week. Milkbox Bakery is a new business owned and operated by Andrea Geary of Cedar Falls. Geary previously owned and operated a retail/commercial bakery in Illinois before returning to her home state of Iowa, where she worked for a time at UNI advocating for local food and farms.

Milkbox Bakery focuses on artisan breads, sandwich loaves, pastries, and specialty desserts hand-crafted daily with locally produced ingredients. Hansen's Dairy will offer a variety of breads from Rustic White sandwich loaves to a grain-dense Mightiest Multigrain, with the potential for more products to come.

Milkbox Bakery also offers a subscription and weekly delivery service for their breads and pastries, with custom-made specialty desserts available for delivery as well. Subscribers receive a hand-built milkbox to store near their front door for receiving their weekly deliveries, which was the inspiration for the name of the business.

For more information, or to sign up for weekly deliveries, visit Milkbox Bakery's website at www.milkboxbakery.com, follow them on Facebook and Instagram, or contact Andrea at (319) 242-1624 or andrea@milkboxbakery.com

Customer of the Month
The May Customers of the Month are Roger and Kathleen Struck of Eldora.

The Strucks visit Hansen's Dairy farm regularly to load up on products for themselves, their daughter's family and some neighbors. They've been buying products for as long as they can remember. The family will even buy 40-pound blocks of cheese to take home to shred and share.

Kathleen's favorite product is Chocolate Turtle Ice Cream. Their grandchildren love Hansen's milk. One of their 9-year-old grandkids said he likes to drink the whole milk because "it's got everything in it" (all the cream)! They also like the string cheese.

Thanks, Roger and Kathleen! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate for our stores and hands-on tour passes for the farm. Submit your entries at our Hansen's Dairy stores in Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

Cows of the Month
The May Cow of the Month is Shantel. This summer she will be nine years old. Of her seven calves, five were girls (heifers) and two were boys (bulls). The heifers have grown up to be some of the best cows in the barn! She is a good cow and great to work with.

To date, Shantel has given us 154,000 pounds of milk with high milkfat percentages! Currently, she is milking 146 pounds a day. It is so natural for her that she makes it look easy. She is a big cow, standing almost 5'6" tall. This large frame gives her more room to store food in her (rumen) stomach. The more food a cow can digest, the more milk she is able to produce. On average, a cow will eat 90-100 pounds of food a day. Shantel surely surpasses that amount on a regular basis.
Genuine Faux Farm CSAs
Genuine Faux Farm will be selling certified organic heirloom vegetable plants at the Cedar Falls Hansen's Dairy store on three Thursdays in May.  They will offer tomato, pepper, eggplant, lettuce and other vegetable plants May 12, 19, and 26 from 4:30 - 6 p.m.

GFF is a certified organic vegetable and poultry farm located near Tripoli.  If growing your own garden is not for you, let GFF be your "personal farmers" when you subscribe to their vegetable CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).

Genuine Faux Farm delivers vegetable shares "market style" so customers can see the vegetables and have choices from each type of vegetables. While selecting the produce, customers can talk with their farmers, Rob and Tammy Faux, about growing methods or get ideas about how to prepare the vegetables. Brochures and sign-up information are available in both Hansen's Dairy stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo.
