April 2016
Photo of the Month
A group of kids got to visit with the dry cows.
Spring is here and it is time to get out for some fun! Come out to our farm for a hands-on tour. You can take a trolley ride around the farm (weather permitting), milk a cow, bottle-feed a calf, pet kangaroos and goats, make your own butter and enjoy our tasty products. Hansen's Dairy is proud to be part of the local food movement and we enjoy showing people how our milk gets from the cow to their table. Hands-on tours take place at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday (by appointment only). Reserve your spot today by calling (319) 939-2187.
Graduation is coming soon...
Do you have a 2016 graduate? Have you reserved your party location? Our tour center in Hudson makes a great venue for graduations, birthdays, showers, reunions and other parties! Ask about our amenities. We have full kitchen, refrigerator/freezer, large 8' serving island, and seating for 60+ guests. Our on-site racquetball court can also be used for playing wallyball, basketball and more.

Call Jeanne at (319) 939-2187 with any questions and to reserve your date. Alternate small party space is available to reserve at our location in Waterloo. Call Moo Roo for more details, (319) 234-3309.

Also, don't forget about all the products we sell to serve at your event! We've got meats, cheeses, popcorn, chips, salsa, hummus, ice cream and ice cream cakes to suit your needs.
Hansen's Dairy, fueling your body AND your car!
Artist's rendering of new Hansen's Dairy
gas station signage
You probably already know that Hansen's Dairy took ownership of the gas station next to our Cedar Falls store last year, making our site a one-stop shop for many of your food and fuel needs. Soon the signage will reflect that as well.

With this transition we have let go of the Conoco label, thus keeping more of your money in the Cedar Valley and less going to big corporations. This is one more way we offer people to spend their money locally. Please bear with us as we go through this transition.

In early April, the gas station will have a new exterior look as we officially transition to the Hansen's Dairy logo on the street signs, fuel canopy and gas pumps. Keep your eye out for some fun promotions as we hold a grand reopening event later this spring. More details to come!

New look - and new name - for Moo Roo
Artist's rendering of stores at Kimball and Ridgeway, Waterloo

Our Waterloo store is also getting a face-lift! The new facade is nearing completion.

To match our Cedar Falls look, the signage at Moo Roo will be changed to Hansen's Dairy as well. Don't worry, the inside of the store remains the same! This change will match our rebranding efforts for name consistency throughout our stores and labels. We introduced a new logo last year, which is reminiscent of the old-time milk bottle caps and reminds customers of a more wholesome time. As a family-owned brand, we wanted to feature the Hansen name more prominently. The colors of red and teal also make the logo visually pop. And it still features a kangaroo drinking milk!

We hope you enjoy our new look, and we thank you for your continued support of our family business.

Customer of the Month
Donna-Joan Kringlen
The April Customer of the Month is Donna-Joan Kringlen of Fairbank. She is a retired teacher of Spanish and eight other languages.

Favorite Hansen product: "Milk! I wasn't a big milk drinker until I found your products. I like that you don't use the high-heat pasteurization. I drink it and cook with it and I won't drink any other milk anymore. I also love the homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches, and any of the chocolate ice cream flavors!"

Thanks, Donna-Joan! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate for our stores and hands-on tour passes for the farm. Submit your entries at our Hansen's Dairy stores in Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

Cows of the Month
Apple Bees and Apple Pucker are both full sisters descending from Apple a very expensive cow.
The April Cows of the Month are Apple Bees and Apple Pucker. These girls are full sisters and granddaughters of the famous cow Apple, the one and only Red and White Holstein that sold for $1 million in 2008. Bees and Pucker look outstanding and perform well in the milking parlor.

These girls are very close -- so close they even had their first calves only 10 days apart. Both calves are heifers (named Apple Salad and Apple Wine).

Bees and Pucker are truly best friends. When you see one, you don't have to look far for the other. Whether eating, resting or milking, they are usually side-by-side.

They both have wonderful personalities. If you were on a farm tour in 2015 you should remember these girls from their time in the dry cow pen. They love all the attention they are given.

All our Apple offspring cows carry Apple in their name. The next time you come and visit look for the picture of an Apple on their eartag. Now you will know they are all related and have a special meaning to their name!

Genuine Faux Farm CSAs
Hansen's Dairy will once again be partnering with area CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) to help make local vegetables available to customers.

Genuine Faux Farm, a certified organic vegetable farm located in Tripoli, will again be delivering vegetable shares at the Hansen's Dairy store in Cedar Falls on Thursday afternoons from June-October.  Genuine Faux Farm delivers vegetable shares "market style" so customers can see the vegetables and have choices from each type of vegetables. While selecting the produce, customers can talk with their farmers, Rob and Tammy Faux, about growing methods or get ideas about how to prepare the vegetables. Brochures and sign-up information are available in both Hansen's Dairy stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo.

Cooking with Hansen's
Greek Chicken Wrap
Tzatziki Herb Yogurt Sauce

Here's a fresh and flavorful meal idea for spring! Starred items can be purchased at our stores.

INGREDIENTS

For the sauce:
  • 2 cups plain Country View Dairy yogurt*
  • 1 cup peeled, seeded and diced cucumber
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
For the wrap:
  • 1 (6-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breast*
  • 1 tablespoon light Italian dressing
  • 4 (6-inch) whole wheat pitas
  • 2 cups chopped lettuce*
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 cup sliced red onion
  • 1/4 cup crumbled Feta cheese*
  • 4 kalamata or black olives, pitted and sliced
DIRECTIONS
For the sauce: In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients until blended. Sauce may be made up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate until serving.

For the wrap: Place chicken breast in a plastic bag and add Italian dressing. Let the chicken marinate for 15 minutes; pound (using a meat pounder or mallet or the bottom of a skillet) and flatten to about 1/2-inch thickness; remove chicken.

In a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, cook chicken breast about 5 minutes per side or until nicely browned and cooked through. Place chicken on a cutting board and slice thinly against the grain; set aside.

Warm pitas in microwave oven for 30 seconds. Place one pita on a plate and spread 1/2 cup of the lettuce and 1/4 of the chicken slices on top. Sprinkle 1/4 each of the tomato, onion, Feta cheese and olives. Spoon some of the tzatziki sauce over top and fold in edges of pita. Wrap sandwich in parchment or waxed paper for plating and serving. Repeat with remaining pitas. Serve immediately with additional sauce on the side.
