October 2015
Photo of the Month
Did you know that Hansen's Dairy has about 200 calves born every year? That's about one every other day. Each one of our heifer calves get a name (the same first initial as their mom). At six months old they will each get an ear tag with their name. Each cow has their own personality!

With a hands-on tour you can feed a baby calf, milk a cow, socialize with the kangaroos, make butter and sample our products. Call 319-939-2187 to schedule a tour or visit our website for details.
New look, same great taste
Did you notice our new logo at the top of this email?

It's been 11 years since we've introduced our dairy products to the Cedar Valley, and it's time for a visual update. The new logo is reminiscent of the old-time milk bottle caps and reminds customers of a more wholesome time. As a family-owned brand, we wanted to feature the Hansen name more prominently. The colors of red and teal also make the logo visually pop. And it still features a kangaroo drinking milk!

The new logo has recently appeared around town in some of our advertising. Look for new labels on your milk jugs and other products coming soon.

Thank you to Mike Tyer of Cohesive Creative and Code of Hudson for designing our new look!
Cows of the Month
This month there are two cows sharing the spotlight (or should we say moonlight). Both Mummie and Spooky had their first calves in the last month and are doing great getting their routine figured out.

In the spirit of Halloween please enjoy a short "spooky" story:

It was a cool morning in the dark of the barn. The sun had yet to rise on the horizon, leaving the shadows to tell their own stories. The smell of fresh silage filled the air while the feed wagon was being unloaded. I got an eerie feeling and shivers when up my spine. Looking up to appease my furor, I caught a glimpse of two cows, Mummie and Spooky. They were looking right at me. Their eyes were glowing an alien green like a laser right through me. Every hair on my neck stood on end. As I stepped closer my pulse got faster and my heart raced. The harsh glow caused me to look away for a second ... and when I looked back, they were innocently eating their breakfast and waiting their turn to go into the milking parlor.

Tiny But Mighty Popcorn
In addition to selling Hansen's milk, butter, cheese curds, ice cream and cream, our stores strive to offer high-quality staple food items from other local farmers and entrepreneurs. Since our goal is to offer the best local products available, we have added a new line of popcorn to our shelves.

Tiny But Mighty Popcorn will change the way you think about popcorn forever!
  • Tiny kernels pack unbelievable flavor and great nutrition
  • Thin outer hull disintegrates and won't get stuck in your teeth
  • Customers, doctors, and dentists tell us it's their favorite
  • Popcorn experts are shocked and amazed that an old variety so unique has survived - this is what popcorn used to be!
Grubb's Premium Popcorn
Grubb's Premium popping corn has been grown on the Grubb family's Century Farm since 1989. Owners, Bill and Ginger Grubb, are the 5th generation to operate this 1874 established homestead located just south of Barnes City, Iowa.

A lot of care goes into producing their popcorn. They grow their corn utilizing the best farming practices. Bill keeps a watchful eye on the crops, and doesn't harvest the corn until it's moisture content is perfect for popping. Thus allowing it to pop into large fluffy pieces of butterfly- or mushroom-shaped popcorn.

Grubb's Premium popcorn is grown, packaged, and sold right from the heart of corn country. They are proud to offer an all natural, non-GMO product.

Getting a Head-Start on the Holidays
Ready to order a turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas? We have two options. All turkeys are minimally processed, no antibiotics are given, and no basting ingredients or artificial ingredients are added. To order, stop by or call Moo Roo in Waterloo (319-234-3309) or Hansen's Outlet in Cedar Falls (319-266-3044).

1. Groothuis Farms Turkeys
Craig and Darlene Groothuis raise free-range turkeys near Nashua, Iowa. From the beginning of November, we will have a limited number of turkeys available in the heavier weight ranges. Last year the turkeys ranged in weight from 16 to 20 pounds. They are sold FROZEN.

2. Bell and Evans Turkeys
Bell and Evans heirloom turkeys are raised on a farm in Pennsylvania. The turkeys are fed an all-vegetarian diet, never given antibiotics, and their meat is considered "light" by USDA standards. Turkeys are raised specifically for our order. As of early November we will have turkeys available in the 6-16 pound weight range. These turkeys are sold FRESH for Thanksgiving.

**If you would like a turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas, please order as soon as you can while supplies last!! We sold out very quickly last year.

Hansen hams are once again available for the upcoming holidays. If you purchased a ham from us last year, expect a call from us to see if you'd like another one this year.

Hansen's Hams are available again this year from Webster City Custom Meats in Webster City, Iowa. They are bone-in, shankless, cured only with their own natural juices, certified hickory-smoked hams made especially for Hansen's customers. There are two sizes: half hams (7-9 pounds, serve 10) and whole hams (15-18 pounds, serve 20).

If you're not already on our call list for hams, please call one of the stores (the one at which you shop the most) and ask about ordering a ham.

Thanksgiving ham orders: If you are celebrating Thanksgiving early, the hams should be ordered by Thursday, November 5 (these hams can be picked up on Nov. 16). The last day to order a ham for Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, Nov. 12. We will make Christmas ham phone calls after Thanksgiving. Feel free to call if you'd like to place an order ahead of time!

NOTE: If you order a ham from the Cedar Falls Outlet, you will pick it up from the Outlet. Customers who order from the Waterloo Moo Roo will pick up at Moo Roo.

We are able to ship hams for you if needed. Shipping and packaging charges will apply, but we are happy to help you.

Cooking with Hansen's
The October recipe is a truly delectable drink. It is adapted from the Nielsen-Massey Fine Vanillas company, which is where we get our delicious vanilla flavoring for our ice cream. The starred ingredients can be purchased at our stores.

  • 8 oz dark roast freshly brewed Sidecar Coffee*
  • 2 tbsp firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 3 oz Hansen's heavy cream*
  • 2 oz Amaretto or Amaretto flavoring
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp pure almond extract
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

In a cocktail shaker, add hot coffee and brown sugar; stir until sugar has dissolved. Add cream, Amaretto, vanilla and almond extracts; fill with ice and shake. Strain mixture into two tall ice-filled glasses. Garnish each glass with 1/8 tsp of cinnamon.
