IT TAKES AN IOWAN
The Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area's traveling exhibit, It Takes An Iowan, focuses on Iowans as leaders in the ongoing endeavor to provide food for the nation and the world.

Blake and Jordan Hansen were at the Iowa State Fair last week promoting the "It Takes an Iowan" booth in the Ag Building (across from the butter cow). Yes, that is them standing next to the display, larger than life!

The exhibit facilitates meeting fellow Iowans making a difference in the areas of the advancement of technology to better cultivate food, the advocacy of agriculture through educational and institutional support, and the global movement of agriculture.
Iowans have had a larger impact than just the products we produce. What can you do to help feed the world? Post using #ItTakesAnIowan.
Cow of the Month
The September Cow of the Month is Duffy.

Duffy just turned five years old and has produced four calves -- all girls! Her four daughters are named Dum Dum, Darkie, Diena, and Dollar. The "D" line has proven to be a high producing milk family that produces a lot of females. Duffy is currently giving 140 pounds of milk a day, which is about 16 gallons! Her total production over three years is 66,000 pounds (7,674 gallons). That's well above average.

As for her personality, Duffy is a bit antisocial when it comes to humans. However, she is very happy and comfortable spending time with her cow peers.

Tour gratitude
If you haven't taken a farm tour yet, be sure to schedule one before the 2015 season comes to a close (Oct. 31). Hands-on tours cost $12/person and take place at 3:30 p.m. Call (319) 939-2187 to make a reservation.

Here's a recent thank-you from a Hansen's tourist:

"We wanted to say thank you so much for our tour last week. Every one of us had a great time. It was so fun to feed the 'babies,' pet the newly born calves, and see the cows and kangaroos. The butter, milk and ice cream were all delicious. Wish you were closer! Very organized, very welcoming, and wow, what an operation. Impressive! Give our best to the cows!!! Thanks again!"
Customer of the Month
The September Customer of the Month is Daisy Murfey of Cedar Falls.
She found a great place to take her photo -- outside Hansen's Outlet on the concrete cow!

What is your favorite Hansen's product?
"Ice cream. Sometimes my dad and I will bike up here to get milk and we'll also get ice cream."

Why do you shop at Hansen's?
"It is fresh, it is local and it is good!"

Thanks, Daisy! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores, a free hands-on farm tour pass ($12 value), and a vehicle decal. Make sure to sign up at our stores for your chance to be selected Customer of the Month!
Cooking with Hansen's
I have approximately a million tomatoes growing on my two plants in the backyard, and I'm constantly looking for good (and easy) recipes to try. These are a few that are on my "have to try immediately" list...

Roasted tomatoes with basil and mozzarella. Cheese curds would probably be an excellent substitute for the mozzarella!

This pasta with raw tomato sauce looks very flavorful and delicious.

Basil tomato salad serves double duty to also use all the delicious basil we've been getting in our CSA lately.

If you can stack slices of tomato, you can make this cucumber and tomato salad, plus there's a delicious homemade blue cheese recipe to go along with it.

Cash Cow
It was a good month for our CA$H COW contest -- we had three $100 winners in August! Jarrod Lister of Cedar Falls, Linnea Ulrich of Cedar Falls, and Pat & Deb Kroll of Waterloo each found a winning jug. Congrats!

Every month we mark several of our gallon milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label. There will be nine jugs marked with $100 in September, so keep your eyes open!

There are also 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize.
