CUSTOMER OF
THE MONTH

The June Customer of the Month is Angie Webb of Waterloo.

Favorite product at Hansen's stores: Eggs! I work out at 5:30 a.m. at Rocfit in Waterloo 4 days a week. It is a high intensity kickboxing and weight lifting class. When I get home, I make myself some scrambled eggs with Hansen's milk and a little bit of pepper. It gives me the energy I need to teach throughout the day (I teach 5th at Orchard Hill) and it is a great source of protein. I also love the grassfed beef sticks for a snack!"

Why do you shop at Hansen's? "I especially like that I am buying local and supporting local farms and businesses. The staff is always so wonderful and I haven't had a product I didn't love!"

Thanks, Liz!

Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores, a free hands-on farm tour pass, and a vehicle decal. Make sure to sign up at our stores for your chance to be selected Customer of the Month!

CA$H COW
CA$H COWCongrats to our four $5 winners in the May CA$H COW contest! Tim Carson of Ackley, Mindy Kramme of Cedar Falls and two other loyal customers found winning jugs.

Every month we mark several of our gallon milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label. It's hard to get the label off cleanly, so the easiest way to check your jug is just finish the milk and look inside at the label. There will either be a "5" or a "100" if you're a winner!

Since no one found a $100 jug last month, we will mark six jugs marked with $100 in June. Your best chance to find a big winner jug is in the next few days!

There are also 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. View details here on our website.

Celebrate Father's Day at

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD --- The milking cows can be seen enjoying a beautiful spring evening from the top of the 110-foot silo on the Hansen's Dairy farm. The silos store silage to feed the cows, which is grown on the land shown surrounding the farm. The Hansen family has owned this farm for 151 years.

June is Dairy Month

Our youngest milk drinker, Beckett Hansen, holds up a gallon of freshly produced milk.

Cheers to drinking milk! Have you ever wondered why we drink cows' milk instead of other mammals' milk?

* According to DairyGood.org, archaeologists and anthropologists have found evidence of people drinking cow's milk dating back several thousand years.

* Cows are capable of producing much more milk than is needed to feed their young. On the Hansen farm, our calves drink 1 gallon of milk per day, but their moms on average produce 10 gallons of milk a day. Cows have been called "the foster mother of the human race."

* Cows' milk is a nutrient powerhouse. Milk
is the No. 1 source of nine essential nutrients in America's children's diets (calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12, riboflavin, and niacin).

* It's affordable, readily available and versatile. While it tastes great alone, it also can be made into many other products, which allows us to get our essential nutrients through a variety of foods (dozens of varieties of cheeses, yogurt, butter, buttermilk, cream and ice cream).

* Cows are natural recyclers! Dairy cows are ruminant animals, which means they have four compartments to their stomach. They can eat parts of plants and foods that humans can't, then convert that food into nutrient rich milk that feeds people.

If you are interested in learning more about cows and milk, take a tour of our farm! We promise you will learn something new and leave with a new-found appreciation for farming. Call 319-939-2187 to schedule a tour or visit our website for details.

Cow of the Month
The June Cow of the Month is Lizett. She just had her first calf on June 1 -- and it was a girl (our favorite)! Cows have their first calf at 2 years old and then start milking for the first time. Lizett is now learning how to navigate through the milking parlor and is making new friends with the other mama cows.

Her new baby's name is Lukette. We always use the same initial of the mom's name to name the calf, and try not to duplicate the names in the history of the farm. Since we have so many L cows, we asked yesterday's tour visitors to help us choose a unique name. They came up with Luke, which we adapted to sound more feminine. :) Look for Lukette to be milking alongside her mother in a couple of years!

Cooking with Hansen's

June will bring berries to the Hansen's stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries...it's going to be amazing!! So instead of passing along just one berry recipe this month, I've compiled the berry recipes that are in my "to make" list online. Drinks, desserts, sauces ... mmm! Enjoy these and let summer begin!

This TRIPLE BERRY CRISP looks just fantastic, and you can use any combo of berries you like.

This recipe for STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE is super simple and so good. I make it as often as possible, and I've never found a better recipe.

If you have a lot of blueberries on hand, this BLUEBERRY SOUR CREAM COFFEE CAKE is just wonderful. It works as breakfast, brunch, or dessert.

This BERRY TRIFLE uses a luscious-looking lemon cream. Tyler Florence is speaking my language...

Berries with steak? Why not? This recipe for BALSAMIC BLUEBERRY STEAK SAUCE looks pretty great. It also works as a pork glaze.

On that note, this PORK WITH BLUEBERRY HERB SAUCE looks perfect.

Tiramisu + berries = YES. You could substitute any raspberry jelly or jam for the coulis as garnish...BERRY TIRAMISU.

For a simple breakfast, layer Big Sky Granola (any flavor), yogurt (your favorite flavor from Hansen's), and a cup of berries - best breakfast!

And finally, for an easy dessert, sprinkle a few tablespoons of sugar on a couple of cups of berries. Stir and let sit to macerate for about half an hour. Then use the juicy and sweet berries as a topping for your favorite Hansen's ice cream!
