CA$H COWEvery month we mark several of our milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label for our CA$H COW contest. It's hard to get the label off cleanly, so the easiest way to check your jug is just finish the milk and look inside at the label. There will either be a "5" or a "100" if you're a winner!

It's possible to find winning jugs of all kinds of milk we sell (skim, 1%, whole and chocolate).

In April, there will be four jugs marked with $100. Your best chance to find a big winner jug is in the next few days!

COW OF
THE MONTH
The April Cow of the Month is Apple Sauce. Apple Sauce's mother is named Apple Juice, and her grandmother is named Apple.

You may recognize Apple Sauce from our Facebook page - she just had her first calf and we asked for names for the little girl. We decided to name her calf Apple Of-My-Eye.

Apple Sauce just celebrated her 2nd birthday in March. Her sister, Apple Slice, was born just one day before her. The two sisters are inseparable and they are fun to watch together. Now that Apple Sauce had her calf and is in the milking herd, Apple Slice is waiting anxiously to calve so the sisters can be in the same group once again!

Huge milestone for
Hansen's Dairy cow   
 
Our oldest cow, Dazzle, recently hit the 300,000-pound milestone of lifetime milk production! Dazzle is the first cow in the history of Hansen's Dairy to produce this much milk. It is also significant in the dairy world - less than 1,000 other registered U.S. dairy cows have hit the same benchmark.

Dazzle was born Nov. 1, 2001, so she is 13 years old. This powerhouse is a great-great grandmother, giving birth to 11 calves. Her longevity can be attributed to her "hard-nosed" attitude, according to herd manager Blake Hansen. Here's to more years, and more milk, from this amazing cow!

Hick's Place beef now in stores

Hick's Place beef is now available at the Cedar Falls Outlet and Waterloo Moo Roo. The beef is hormone-free, antibiotic-free, grass-fed, corn-finished, and a great choice if you want a lower cost alternative to strictly grass-fed beef. The ground beef is sold in one-pound packages at our stores in Cedar Falls and Waterloo.

Amanda Moore of Cedar Falls was the winner of our Ag Day basket giveaway! Her name was drawn from entries at Hansen's Outlet, Moo Roo and the Hansen's Tour Center store. Ag Day celebrates those who feed the world, so our gift basket paid tribute to all the local farmers and entrepreneurs who produce goods for our stores. In addition to Hansen's milk, cream, butter and cheese curds, the basket contained Groothuis eggs, Beeler's Bacon, Doty Angus beef, Country View Dairy yogurt, Edgewood Locker honey pork/pineapple sticks, Timber Ridge beef sticks, Grass Run Farms beef sticks, Marks Locker beef sticks, Kramer's Raspberry Jalapeno Jam, and Cedar Grove cheese.

Cooking with Hansen's

These last chilly days of early spring are perfect for enjoying a cup of cocoa in the evenings. Mexican hot chocolate has an interesting spicy kick with cayenne pepper and cinnamon. Top it off with Hansen's whipped cream or enjoy it plain.


Mexican Hot Chocolate with Whipped Cream

Serves 2

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups Hansen's whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 4 1/2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus a little extra for dusting as garnish
  • Very small pinch cayenne pepper
  • Long cinnamon sticks for stirrers, if you're feeling fancy
  • 1/2 cup of Hansen's heavy cream, whipped until semi-stiff with 1 tablespoon sugar
     
Directions:
Bring the milk and brown sugar to a slow simmer in a medium saucepan. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Let sit for 3 minutes. Reheat over medium-low heat until it just barely simmers again. Pour into two cups and top with a generous dollop of whipped cream. Dust with a bit of cinnamon or cinnamon-sugar, or add a cinnamon stick as a stirrer.
