CA$H COW
|
Congrats to this month's $5 CA$H COW winner: Stephanie Harken of Waverly. Every month we mark several of our milk jugs with either $5 or $100 under the label for our CA$H COW contest. It's hard to get the label off cleanly, so the easiest way to check your jug is just finish the milk and look inside at the label. There will either be a "5" or a "100" if you're a winner!
It's possible to find winning jugs of all kinds of milk we sell (skim, 1%, whole and chocolate). In March, there will be three jugs marked with $100. Your best chance to find a big winner jug is in the next few days! There are also 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. View details here on our website.

COW OF THE MONTH
|
The March Cow of the Month has an interesting story to tell. We chose Shauna for March because her sire (father) is named Shamrock.
Shauna is a twin to a bull. When bovine twins are a boy and a girl, the girl is 90% likely to be a freemartin, which means she likely won't get pregnant (therefore can't give any milk). Herd manager Blake Hansen took a chance that Shauna would beat the odds and kept her around instead of having her be raised for beef, like most freemartins. Well, it paid off! She has had her first calf, and at 2 years old, she is already milking 90 pounds a day. That's 20 pounds over the herdmates average! The Shamrock in her must have brought us luck! ______________________

Celebrate National Ag Day
There are over 7 billion people in the world today. That's 7 billion mouths to feed. Celebrate the individuals who dedicate their lives to feeding the world on March 18, National Ag Day. Find out more at
agday.org.
To help recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by American agriculture, Hansen's Dairy will be giving away an Ag Basket. Beginning Monday, 9, customers can sign up to win the basket, a $50 value, at each one of our retail locations (Moo Roo in Waterloo, Hansen's Outlet in Cedar Falls, and the farm's Tour Center in Hudson). The basket will be filled with Hansen's Dairy products, meats, eggs, and other local goods produced by farmers in Iowa. The winning name will be drawn on Ag Day, March 18.

New membership discount: 20% off Wisconsin cheeses
We are happy to announce a new benefit for our membership card holders at Moo Roo and Hansen's Outlet! Beginning Monday, March 2, members will now receive 20% off Wisconsin cheeses instead of 10%. In stores, look for the orange tags to know what cheeses are discounted. Did you know that Jay Hansen drives to Wisconsin every 8 weeks to pick up these Wisconsin cheeses? These are high-end cheeses that are considered the best of the best in Wisconsin and are national award winners. Because Jay makes the trips to Wisconsin himself, we are able to sell the same cheeses for about half of the price you will find at other Cedar Valley grocery stores.

Hansens on IPTV's 'Century Farms'
|
The first generation of the Hansen family (Christian Brandhorst family) poses on the farm in the 1800s. Now the seventh generation of the family is growing up on the farm.
|
Hansen's Dairy will be featured on the premiere episode of "Iowa's Century Farms" airing Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. on Iowa Public Television.
Family farms have been at the heart of the traditions and heritage upon which the state of Iowa was built since settlers first ventured into the lands west of the Mississippi. The first thing a farmer says when asked about his or her farm is how long it's been in the family. There is a sense of pride in farming land that has been in a family for generation after generation - 100 years or more in some very special cases. Since 1976, over 15,000 Iowa families have been recognized for their Century Farms. Iowa Public Television's latest documentary, Iowa's Century Farms, will examine the resilience of Iowa's Century Farm families and the ways in which they've been able to continue their agricultural traditions for generations to come.

Our March Customer of the Month is Ava Holmes of Raymond. She was the winner of our contest to name the concrete cow in the Kids' Corner at Moo Roo. Ava wanted to name the cow Milkshake! Ava and her mother, Brooke Etringer, enjoy coming to Moo Roo for ice cream treats and to buy all of the Hansen's dairy products. "The ice cream is the best around, and we like to shop locally to keep businesses here," Etringer said. Ava's favorite ice cream flavor is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Ava wins a $20 gift card for her and her family to use at our stores. Thanks to everyone who submitted names in the contest.

Ice cream pie is one of my favorite, quick, go-to desserts. It's easy to make, requires no baking, and always makes people happy. The possibilities are endless (check out additional variations after the recipe). This version is for a minty-green St. Patrick's Day twist.
St. Patty's Day Ice Cream Pie
Ingredients:
- 1 store bought Oreo-cookie pie crust (or other pre-made chocolate pie crust - feel free to make your own!)
- 1/2 gallon Hansen's mint chocolate chip ice cream
- 16 Oreo cookies (or your favorite chocolate wafer cookies, or even Thin Mints would work here)
- 1 cup Hansen's heavy cream, whipped with 1 Tablespoon of sugar
- Chocolate syrup
Directions: Let ice cream soften on the counter for about 15 minutes. Spread a layer of ice cream in the pie crust that doesn't quite reach the halfway mark on the side of the pan (about 1/2 inch thick). Crumble the cookies into large chunks (crumbling each cookie into about four pieces usually does the trick) and spread over the ice cream. Spread another layer of ice cream over the cookies to cover them completely. Put the pie into the freezer to set completely. When ready to serve, take the pie out and let sit for about five minutes to soften slightly for slicing. Garnish each slice with a cookie, a large dollop of whipped cream, and a generous drizzle of chocolate syrup. Variations:- You can use any flavor of ice cream in this pie! And you can use any filling you like. Cookies, candy bar pieces, chocolate chunks, marshmallows, crushed peppermints, you get the idea...
- Instead of a chocolate cookie crust, you can use a graham cracker crust. Those can be purchased at any grocery, or you can make your own. You can also make your own crust using ginger snaps - so delicious!
- Garnish with fruit, candy, cookies, etc.
